There are moments in life that make you stop and think, "How the f** did we get here?"

This is one of them.

This year, Barn Door Hostel and owner Dave, have the opportunity to be recognized in THREE DIFFERENT CATEGORIES at the New Hampshire Lodging & Restaurant Association's Stars of the Industry Awards:

🏆 Rising Star Award (my final year of eligibility before turning 40)
🏆 Hotelier of the Year
🏆 Boutique Lodging Property of the Year

The thought that a little hostel in Rumney could even be considered for all three is something I never imagined when this place existed only as sketches, late-night ideas, and more than a few impossible dreams.

Since opening our doors, this has never been about simply offering a bed. It's been about creating a place where strangers become friends, where outdoor adventures begin, where local businesses thrive together, and where people from around the world discover just how special New Hampshire really is.

Along the way, we've been incredibly fortunate. We've been recognized nationally, earned awards from our peers, welcomed guests from dozens of countries, built partnerships throughout New England, and watched this community grow into something far bigger than ourselves.

But none of those things happened because of one person.

They happened because of YOU.

Every guest who stayed with us.
Every volunteer.
Every staff member.
Every local business that believed in us.
Every climber, hiker, camper, cyclist, paddler, skier, musician, neighbor, and friend who chose to spend even a small part of their journey here.

If Barn Door has ever been part of your story...whether it was one night or twenty, your first climbing trip, your Appalachian Trail adventure, your weekend getaway, or simply a place where you felt welcome, we would be deeply honored if you'd consider submitting a nomination.

The judges don't choose winners based on advertising or popularity. They read the stories people share about the impact a place has had on them. Your experience genuinely matters.

This picture is WILD to me because:

And that’s really what this post is about.

From the very beginning, Serena and the whole Notch crew ( , , and everyone else) have been nothing but supportive, generous, encouraging, and kind to all of us at Barn Door.

People always talk about “community” in hospitality, but the hostel world actually lives it. The hostel community here in New Hampshire (and across the entire Northeast () is something special.

If Notch is sold out, they’re sending guests our way. If an is headed southbound, they recommend us. If we have a question, we know we can call them, and not just for an answer, but for real guidance, encouragement, and friendship.

I love the little hostel family we’ve built up here in New Hampshire (special shoutout to , too). We share knowledge. We share guests. We recommend each other because we genuinely want everyone to succeed. We swap stories while dropping off hikers’ bags at the Pack Shack or sending climbers down to Rumney. It’s collaboration over competition, and it’s made all of us better.

Without Serena, and without the example she set (while Barn Door was still just an idea), we wouldn’t be where we are today. This place would be different. I would be different.

So this is just a little love letter to Notch Hostel.

Thank you for being our big sister. Thank you for showing us the way. And thank you for believing in us long before we knew exactly what we were building.
