The Can-Am Festival has been happening in Sackets Harbor for 54 years. The reason it feels right here — and not somewhere else — goes back further than that. 🇨🇦🇺🇸
In 1813, British forces, including Canadian militia, crossed Lake Ontario and attacked this harbor. American soldiers, sailors, and militia held them off. The losses were real on both sides. The battle was close.
Two years later, the Rush-Bagot Agreement of 1817 demilitarized the Great Lakes and began what became the longest undefended border in the world. The two nations that fought here made peace here and have maintained it for over 200 years.
The Can-Am Festival is, at its core, a celebration of that peace. A celebration of the fact that neighbors who once fought across this lake now share it. That the story of Sackets Harbor does not end with the battles — it continues with everything that came after.
