Artifact Spotlight: Early 19th-Century Hand-Painted Master Mason’s Apron
We are honored to highlight a remarkable new addition to the Amity Lodge No. 4 archives, a hand-painted Master Mason’s apron from Pennsylvania dating to the 1820–1840s.
This apron features a silk front with a linen backing, a construction style typical of early American Masonic regalia. Its surface is adorned with individually hand-painted symbols, including the Two Great Pillars, the All-Seeing Eye, working tools, celestial motifs, and other imagery central to the Master Mason degree. The pleated silk trim, now delicate with age, adds to the historic craftsmanship of this nearly 200-year-old piece.
This extraordinary apron was generously donated by a participant who attended our Sundaes with the Spirits event held at the Amity Lodge building on October 10, 2025. We are deeply grateful for this contribution, which enriches our growing archival collection and strengthens our understanding of early Masonic history.
As part of our ongoing preservation project, the apron will be documented, stabilized, and digitized to ensure its story and artistry can be shared with members, researchers, and the wider community.
With more than 15,000 digitized images now in the Amity archives, we look forward to sharing additional artifacts in the coming weeks.
