Artifact Spotlight: Early 19th-Century Hand-Painted Master Mason’s Apron

We are honored to highlight a remarkable new addition to the Amity Lodge No. 4 archives, a hand-painted Master Mason’s apron from Pennsylvania dating to the 1820–1840s.

This apron features a silk front with a linen backing, a construction style typical of early American Masonic regalia. Its surface is adorned with individually hand-painted symbols, including the Two Great Pillars, the All-Seeing Eye, working tools, celestial motifs, and other imagery central to the Master Mason degree. The pleated silk trim, now delicate with age, adds to the historic craftsmanship of this nearly 200-year-old piece.

This extraordinary apron was generously donated by a participant who attended our Sundaes with the Spirits event held at the Amity Lodge building on October 10, 2025. We are deeply grateful for this contribution, which enriches our growing archival collection and strengthens our understanding of early Masonic history.

As part of our ongoing preservation project, the apron will be documented, stabilized, and digitized to ensure its story and artistry can be shared with members, researchers, and the wider community.

With more than 15,000 digitized images now in the Amity archives, we look forward to sharing additional artifacts in the coming weeks.

Artifact Spotlight: The 1865 Freeman & Co. Invoice, And the Columns Still Standing Today

As part of our ongoing effort to share pieces from the newly completed Amity Lodge No. 4 Archives Project, today we’re featuring an extraordinary document dated February 22, 1865, an invoice sent from B. H. Freeman & Co., stair builders and woodworkers of San Francisco, to Silver City.

This invoice records the purchase of wooden columns and related materials for use here in Silver City, and remarkably, those very columns are still part of Amity Lodge’s historic collection and remain in use in the building today, more than 160 years later.

Businesses like Freeman & Co. were crucial suppliers for the Comstock region. Fine architectural features such as columns, stair posts, rails, and trim were rarely produced locally in the 1860s. Instead, they were crafted in San Francisco and shipped by wagon across the Sierra. Each delivery represented craftsmanship and community investment in a rapidly growing mining town.

If you look closely at the document, you’ll also see a blue 2-cent U.S. revenue stamp, required during the Civil War period to help fund the Union.

This invoice is one of more than 15,000 items digitized and preserved through our archives project, each one helping us better understand the story of Amity Lodge No. 4, chartered in Silver City in 1863 and still active today.

Stay tuned as we continue sharing more artifacts from the collection.
