Liz has trekked through some of the world’s toughest terrain while dodging everything from bullets to floods to bring us these amazing photographs and The Last Safari, a documentary directed and edited by Matt Goldman. Following is an Extract VANITY FAIR November 5, 2013 :
In 2003, former war photographer Liz Gilbert published Broken Spears, a gorgeous collection of photographic works capturing the disappearing Masai people of Kenya. Four years later, she completed Tribes of the Great Rift Valley, at 272-page tome that documents the rich culture and beauty in a region too often known for war and atrocity. Though her work enjoyed accolades in the West, the subjects themselves didn’t see the photos until 2011, when Gilbert returned to the Great Rift Valley. With an inkling that her trip might be worth sharing, she recorded the journey on video. The result is The Last Safari, a documentary directed and edited by Matt Goldman, Gilbert’s partner and the father of their son (who was conceived on the trip!).
The film navigates a rapidly modernizing Kenya and captures the complexity in Gilbert’s attempt to convince traditional communities of their own cultural significance.
