St. Augustine’s Old City Gates circa 1865 compared to now, looking south down St. George Street. Step back in time and explore the ancient city with us.

Founded in 1565 by Pedro Menendez de Aviles who claimed the land for Spain, St. Augustine is the oldest continuously occupied city in North America.

However the first Europeans here were actually the French Huguenots, who had settled just north in what is now the present day Mayport area of Jacksonville. Menendez drove them out and further south, in a bloody battle event that gave Matanzas Bay its name. (‘Matanzas’ translates to ‘massacre’ in Spanish)

Of course long before the European arrival, North Florida was inhabited by the Timucuan Native Americans who fished, hunted and cultivated the land. The village of Seloy was located in what is now the present day Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park and the Mission Nombre de Dios area.

Currently, my St Augustine beach 🏠 house has a 2 month renter in it. As she’s getting ready to leave, I texted her asking if there was any feedback, anything I need to fix, anything she wants to share with me? This was her text 🥰☀️🐠

Hi Heidi. Here you go!

- So spacious but not to point you feel distant from family
- Great floor choice. Perfect for sand but so stylish. Nice and cool on feet too
- Bikes- love love love them! so nice to ride around neighborhood, explore town or beach
- Love proximities state park. Nature trail was great especially for dog and park beach is lovely- less crowded and more peaceful than public one that is more developed
- Public one is still very short drive (or bike ride even) and dog loves it there. He knows the turns now and gets excited if we turn left out of neighborhood.
- Front porch is best place to enjoy some morning coffee (unless catching a sunrise at the beach)
- By the pool or in the pool is where to be come mid day. Even on days when it’s off and on rain, may avoid beach but easy to jump in pool when sun comes out for hour or two
- Peaceful neighborhood- great for walks. Love the trees over hang on the streets.
- Great neighbors too
- Screened in porch- almost every dinner was eaten here Even when raining (light rain). We used dining room table as our work space so it was wonderful having extra table in house
- Such a great comfy couch. So many naps. Call dibs on corner spot
- Puzzles in home renewed our love of puzzles. We actually bought a few more while here
- Love having a grill. Love me some fish, especially when at the beach, but not when cooking inside
- The coastal decor touches. Not over the top but enough to remember we are at the beach and mermaids live here
- Decor is good for the soul. Even on rainy days still peaceful and calming just being inside thanks to lovely decor, colors, and comfy furniture
- House is set up to easily make you feel at home. Layout is great but even the details are lovely- plenty of pantry room for food, great master closet, hook by door for dog leash, dressers for clothes, well stocked kitchen (including Xmas wine glasses- which yes we used while watching a Xmas movie in September)
- Vacuum by door for sand in cars
- Love keyless entry
- Pool furniture super comfy
- Coffee table turning perfect for puzzles
- Great laundry room and washer/dryer. Easy to use. Great settings. And love that counter on top to short clothes out of dryer
- and seriously that pool. I watched a webinar from that pool just to be in it more. 💕
