Spanish crews quarried the stone from the King's Quarry on Anastasia Island and ferried it across Matanzas Bay. Coquina, packed shell and sand, looks like a poor choice for a fort until someone shoots at it. When English forces from Carolina laid siege in 1702, roughly 1,500 people sheltered inside for two months while cannonballs buried themselves in the soft walls instead of breaking them. Reinforcements from Havana ended the siege.

That fort still stands in St. Augustine: walls 14 feet thick at the base, star-shaped bastions, water on one side. It logged 251 years of continuous military possession under Spain, Britain and the United States. National Monument since 1924, Park Service run now, $15 for adults and free for anyone 15 and under.
