General Troop Information
Meeting Time and Location: Troop 317 meets each Thursday of the month from 7:00-8:30p.m. in the Scout Center at Christ Church United Methodist (4614 Brownsboro Road). Exceptions include the third Thursday (see below), Thanksgiving, Christmas break, spring break, and other holidays that fall on Thursday. We also skip a few meetings over the summer; see the troop calendar
for details. Patrol Leaders Council: The patrol leaders council (the troop’s junior leadership group) meets on the third Thursday of each month in lieu of the regular troop meeting. Boards of review for rank advancement are also held that evening. Troop Committee: The troop committee(the “board of directors” of the troop) meets in the Scout Center on the third Sunday of each month at 5:00 p.m. See the troop calendar for details. Inclement Weather Policy: Troop meetings are canceled if Jefferson County Public Schools are closed or dismissed early due to inclement weather or other county-wide emergency. Outing cancellations are determined on a case-by-case basis. In all instances, we notify families by email and telephone. Troop Calendar: A troop calendar is published after each PLC planning conference. The calendar includes all scheduled meetings and activities for the next 6 months, typically established every March and October. Troop Website: Our troop’s website is located at www.troop317bsa.org. Here, you can access the troop calendar, useful forms, rosters, and other valuable information. You’ll need a login to get to most parts of the website; fill out the contact form on the site or check with one of the adult leaders for details. Troop Newsletter: Each Wednesday, we email an electronic newsletter to everyone in the troop. This newsletter is our main ongoing communication. It includes details on upcoming meetings and outings, pictures from past outings, the current calendar, and other articles of interest. It’s very important that you get on the mailing list for the newsletter; otherwise, you won’t know what’s going on in the troop. (You didn’t expect your son to tell you, did you?) See an adult leader for more information. Troop Sponsorship: Troop 317 is chartered to Christ Church United Methodist and is considered part of the church’s youth ministry and its outreach to the community. Church membership is neither required nor expected for participation in the troop. However, if you are interested in more information about the church and its programs, feel free to talk to one of the troop leaders. We’re fortunate to have an excellent relationship with the church, and we celebrate that relationship by participating in the Scout Sunday worship service on the second Sunday in February each year. About the Scout Center: In the fall of 2007, the troop moved from the old Scout house at Christ Church to the brand-spanking-new Scout Center in the church’s lower level (rooms 027A-C). This 1,700-square-foot space includes a meeting room, office, conference room, four patrol rooms, a library, and equipment storage closets.
