More cool info:

The oldest building located within the Island’s End Resort is of the Frame Vernacular style that was constructed in ca. 1946. The building was constructed as a private residence and cottage and currently serves as Unit C of the resort. The building is located between Units D & E and Unit B, south of 1st Avenue. Two other Frame Vernacular style buildings, Units D & E and Unit B, were constructed in ca. 1950 or earlier. The most recently constructed contributing resource within the resort complex is the ca. 1957 Masonry Vernacular style building which contains Units A & F. The building containing Units A & F was initially constructed as private residence for the Radio Evangelist Grady Tyree Cantrell and his wife Eleanor Burch Cantrell who owned Island’s End Resort. They began purchasing the lots that make up the resort in 1952, and Cantrell’s 1959 purchase created the final boundaries of Island’s End Resort.

Island’s End appears to have initially started as a private residence for the Cantrells and a rental cottage for short-term and/or long-term rentals. As the Cantrells purchased more land and buildings, they expanded their operations. By 1959, they lived on the property in what is now Units A and F (8PI21665), while renting the other buildings as apartments. Units A and F (8PI21665) were later converted from a single-family residence into two rental units

We received the documents for the state to create a master site file for historic designation today! It's step one to getting permits. It includes some really cool information and pictures I'm excited to share!

Historic Context: The area in which the Island’s End Resort is located was first platted in 1895 as the Morey Beach Subdivision (Figure 1). The Island’s End Resort is within Block 12 and contains Lots 1, 4, 5, 8, and 9. Prior to becoming the Island’s End Resort, the southern tip of Pass-A-Grille was used by the United States military to aid in Florida’s coastal defense from 1942 through 1945. Aerial photographs from 1945 show a watch tower and various small support buildings in the location of what would become Island’s End Resort and military barracks on the north side of 1st Avenue across from the future location of the resort (National Archives 1945a, 1945b) (Figures 2 and 3). With the conclusion of World War II, the military withdrew its presence on Pass-A-Grille, and private citizens soon began developing and building in this area

Hi Guys! I know I haven't posted recently. Honestly, it has been so disheartening not having any news to share either good or bad.

I had a meeting with the city last week and we have a path forward to get back some of the paradise we love. In order to repair any of the buildings, we have to get the site deemed historic. There's a FEMA 50% rule and building depreciation and a whole bunch of things go into it but essentially, that is our only option.

The good news is there is an option. The bad news is the amount of time it could take. We have to get a master site file created on the property. The city employee who does that is backed up at the moment (for obvious reasons), so I am looking to hire someone to do it for us quicker.

Now, how can you help. A lot of you have reached out asking how you can help us move forward. In talking with the city, we are going for a cultural significance historic designation. Basically, we are historic because we are an iconic part of the city that they want to preserve. I know a lot of you have been coming for years if not generations. The city said we can include letters from guests and St Pete Beach residents as to how important we are. So I need your letters and your memories. You can email them to [email protected] or mail them to 1 Pass A Grille Way, St Pete Beach, FL 33706. These will be a part of the public record so please keep that in mind.

We still have a road to recovery but at least there is a path. Unfortunately, A and F are too far damaged for us to restore them at this time. Our goal is for B, C, D and E.

Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving. And here is a picture of Jake as a chicken for Halloween to make you smile.
