With the days getting longer, there’s now more time after dinner to hop on a bike and find a great spot to watch the sunset. Norm’s Pond can be a great place to watch the sun slip away while the birds in the rookery settle down for the night. Just stepping down to the dock or taking a short walk along Beach Road will reward you with great sunset views over the marshes to the west.

Did you know? Loggerhead Sea Turtle mothers crawl onto the shore to lay their eggs. They excavate a hole at the base of the dunes, deposit their eggs, cover the nest with sand, and then crawl back to the ocean. They typically lay 3-5 clutches of eggs over the course of a summer. All of this typically takes place in the safety of darkness, but occasionally a mama turtle won’t make it back to the water before the sun comes up. LSSI staff were lucky to catch this glimpse of a “dawn nester” on her way back to sea!
Our staff are trained and permitted to conduct sea turtle research. It’s important not to disturb sea turtles or disrupt their nesting behaviors. If you see a nesting turtle, stand back to watch from a respectful distance.

We just wrapped up our spring photography workshop and the results speak for themselves! Check out the photos from the event!
We thank Steve Barten for leading this great workshop again. Each attendee added species to their life lists and captured photos to remember LSSI forever. This time of year is perfect for photographing migrant species, the wading bird rookery, spring wildflowers, and the verdant coastal landscapes we all cherish.
Want to participate? Keep an eye out for next year’s dates here and on our website (link in bio).

We love watching migration spectacles along the coast at LSSI. Birdwatching has been excellent this spring, and some species are already nesting while others continue to pass through on their way further north. Yellow-throated Warblers are one of our favorite migrants that nest on the Island. If you watch closely, you can spot them construct hanging nests in the Spanish moss! 🪺
