If you're out fishing at the pond, you might just catch one of these guys...

🐿️Wildlife Wednesday🐾

The Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) is the most common squirrel species in Salisbury and is even the official State Mammal of North Carolina. They are highly adaptable, frequently found in local hardwood forests, city parks, and your own backyard. A few key facts about these Salisbury locals:

Appearance: They have silver-gray fur, a distinct white underbelly, and a prominent bushy tail, though their color can sometimes appear brownish.

Diet: Their staple diet includes acorns, nuts, tree buds, and berries, but they are known to raid bird feeders in residential neighborhoods.

Breeding: Mating peaks in the Piedmont region around late winter (February) and late summer (August).

State Wild Mammal: They were chosen as the NC state mammal in 1969 after a survey of school children.
