Wildlife Wednesday

You are most likely to find the native Carolina mantis (Stagmomantis carolina) or the non-native invasive Chinese mantis (Tenodera sinensis) in the Salisbury, North Carolina area.

Local Mantis Species

Carolina Mantis (Native): This smaller native species grows up to about 2 inches long, featuring a mottled gray, brown, or green camouflage pattern and a rectangular faceplate. Their wings are shorter, covering only about three-quarters of the abdomen in females.

Chinese Mantis (Invasive): This much larger introduced species reaches 3 to 5 inches long with a squarish faceplate and wings that extend the full length of the abdomen. Garden stores sometimes sell their Styrofoam-like egg cases (ootheca) for pest control, but they can outcompete the native Carolina mantis.

Mantises are generalist ambush predators. They eat whatever they can catch, which includes beneficial pollinators like bees, butterflies, and spiders just as often as pests.

Green tree frogs and other native species live in the Piedmont region around Salisbury, North Carolina, often near damp woodlands and local nature preserves.

Habitat and Habits

Nocturnal: Active at night, resting in moist, shady spots or under bark by day.

Diet: Feed mostly on small flying insects near porch lights or garden plants.

Protection: Most native North Carolina tree frogs are classified as nongame species with specific state protections

Today, we say goodbye to one of the brightest lights the world has ever known. Dolly Parton passed away today at the age of 80, leaving behind a legacy that will never fade.

From the Smoky Mountains to stages around the world, Dolly captured hearts with her incredible voice, unforgettable songs, sparkling personality, and, most importantly, her generous heart. Songs like Jolene, 9 to 5, Coat of Many Colors, and I Will Always Love You became part of the soundtrack of our lives.

But Dolly was so much more than a country music icon. She was a storyteller, actress, businesswoman, philanthropist, and a champion for children and literacy through her Imagination Library. Her kindness and generosity touched countless lives.

As we gather around campfires, share stories, listen to music, and enjoy the simple pleasures of life, we can’t help but think of the joy Dolly brought to so many.
