🌊 There’s a reason the Outer Banks are called the Graveyard of the Atlantic. More than 2,000 ships have been lost off these shores, and this wreck has quite a story.

For decades, it was believed to be the Pocahontas, but historians have since identified it as the SS Richmond, a former Confederate blockade runner. In 1866, a faulty compass caused the ship to drift off course, sending her onto the dangerous shoals off Salvo, where she was lost.

βš“ Today, you can still see part of the paddle-wheel machinery rising from the surf about 75 yards offshore near Sand Street in Salvo.

🐒We have baby sea turtles in our backyard! 🐒When you are on the island, please help protect them! One of the many things that makes Cape Hatteras National Seashore so special is the amount of unspoiled beauty and wildlife on our little slice of paradise.

🐒Remember Sea Turtle Nesting Season is from May 1- Oct 31. Nesting mother turtles and hatchlings use the moon, stars and breaking waves to find their way to nesting beaches. Artificial lights near the beach cause disorientation. The sea turtles mistake artificial lights for the moon, causing them to crawl into dunes, sidewalks or streets where they die of dehydration or are taken by predators.

You can help sea turtle by doing the following:

🐒Keep lights out!
🐒Fill beach holes
🐒Knock down sandcastles when leaving the beach
🐒Leave only footprints
🐒Don't use flashlights
🐒Do not disturb sea turtle nests

Did you know that Hatteras Island is one of the best destinations for stargazing and rocket launches?! The extremely dark skies at Cape Hatteras National Seashore are some of the darkest on the East Coast. Minimal light pollution, and unobstructed, expansive ocean views provide a perfect, clear backdrop for viewing celestial events, the Milky Way, and distant rocket launches.
This was a Space x launch that we viewed from around the pool Pelican Watch Hatteras Island. We are hoping to catch a glimpse of the Artemis II launch tonight! Godspeed astronauts πŸš€β­οΈ
