Great article from National Geographic praising the Outer Banks and especially the shoulder season. We don't have anything open for the rest of May but from August 15th onward we have lots of availability. September and October are my favorite months to be at Everybody Wants Sun. The best part, costs are much less than the high season! Just be sure to buy trip insurance, it's a low price (usually a hundred dollars or so) for peace of mind just in case of a hurricane.
From the article:
"The shoulder season—between April and May in the spring and September and October in the fall—is often one of the better times to travel. The weather is nice and there aren’t nearly as many crowds as family vacations typically don’t start until school lets out. Best of all, pretty much everything is open for business."

Fewer crowds, cooler temperatures and lower prices make shoulder season the Outer Banks’s best-kept secret—without sacrificing the wild beauty that made the barrier islands famous.
