HBSC is closed.
I know a lot of people are angry, disappointed, confused, or feel let down. Truthfully, I understand why. There are absolutely things I could have done differently along the way and I’ll own that. Running a small independent business under constant financial pressure, inherited debt, infrastructure issues, and nonstop moving targets doesn’t excuse every mistake.
But despite everything, employees were paid. Vendors were paid. Shows happened. Weddings happened. People gathered. We kept the lights on a lot longer than most people thought we could.
What didn’t get paid was rent.
And here’s the part that deserves more conversation. The City of Eureka had multiple opportunities to recover arrears without forcing an immediate shutdown. Buyers were lined up. Deals were being worked. Paths forward existed. Instead, the decision was made to move in a direction that will likely cost taxpayers significantly more while leaving another historic property sitting vulnerable and empty.
Within 4 days of the eviction there was already a break in and parts of the property had to be boarded up. That happened almost immediately after operations stopped.
I know there are guests and customers affected by all of this as well. Refunds for cancellations that were unable to be honored will be processed over the next 30 days. It may take some time, but I am doing my best to make that right.
And for everyone asking if this is truly the end, honestly, I still don’t know. There is still a chance HBSC survives in some form. Conversations are still happening behind the scenes. But today, the needle isn’t really moving much in either direction.
At the end of the day, HBSC was never just a business to me. It was a weird, beautiful, chaotic place that a lot of people poured themselves into. Late nights, music, weddings, friendships, celebrations, heartbreak, community. A place where a lot of people felt like they belonged for a little while.
Thank you to the people who saw that part of it.
