Our unusually warm winter has finally gotten a little cooler. We have a bit of snow on the Magdalena Mountains to the west of us.

Bad news for those of you planning to visit Trinity Site.

Because of the government shutdown, Trinity Site Open House is cancelled.

However, Socorro County has some great things going on for our visitors!

The Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, about 8 miles south of the camping space, is a great place to visit. You’ll see javalenas, deer and turkeys, and in winter months, thousands of sandhill cranes and snow geese! There are numerous trails for hiking, a great visitor center to peruse, and volunteers and staff on hand to advise you of the latest at the Bosque. It is still open however the Visitor Center is not.

If you have time to drive around a bit, interesting geology and scenery can be experienced on the Quebradas back country by-way, east of the Rio Grande, San Lorenzo Canyon, west of I-25 at Lemitar, and of course, the Very Large Array, not affected by tge shutdown, is a great tour, 45 miles west of Socorro on US Highway 60, about 15 minutes west of Magdalena. If you have a desire for heights, the drive through Water Canyon (off US Highway 60) to the top of South Baldy where Langmuir Laboratory and the Magdalena Ridge Observatory are located, is a great adventure!

If you like to golf, New Mexico Tech has a great course. Also, at NMT is the New Mexico Bureau of Mines, which houses a world class mineral museum with rock and mineral specimens from all over the world. It's amazing! Their gift shop is quite a treat!

On the Socorro Plaza is the famous Capital Bar which is worth poking your head into for a view back into history. They have microbrews and basic bar foods. Also just east of the Plaza is Box Canyon Brewery, great brews and food. The Baca House just north of the plaza has great food and microbrews. Music at all three throughout the week.

The shops around the Plaza are great fun!
