Where the Story Begins
The year was 1926, in San Diego, California.
Prohibition was law across the United States, though downtown San Diego remained active long after midnight — behind late-night restaurant doors, inside upstairs clubs, and in crowded bars where nobody asked questions.
Motor coaches rolled into Broadway carrying travelers from Los Angeles long after dark. Music drifted from upper floors. Somewhere along the waterfront, a ship was preparing to leave by morning.
And at the corner of Front and Broadway, a new hotel was beginning to rise.
Around it, San Diego itself was changing — growing beyond its frontier past into a city few could yet fully imagine.
The story was only beginning.
