Before Sunrise

By the early twentieth century, word had reached fishing towns across Sicily and Southern Italy — there was work along the California coast.

Some immigrants arrived by steamship, then continued south by rail toward San Diego, drawn by rumors of an expanding Pacific fishing industry. Others came after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake displaced Italian communities farther north.

As downtown San Diego grew through the Pickwick years — hotels, theaters, rail depots, arriving tourists — another community was building something of its own along the waterfront.

Before sunrise, Italian fishermen moved through dark streets carrying rope, nets, and lanterns toward boats waiting in the harbor below.

Over time, the growing tuna industry transformed their neighborhood into what San Diego now calls Little Italy.

Saving Balboa Park

The exhibition halls, sculpted towers, and tiled arcades built for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition were never meant to last.

City officials had designed them as temporary structures — expecting most to be torn down once the fair ended and the visitors went home.

But a growing coalition of civic leaders and preservationists fought to save what the exposition had built before the city erased the very architecture beginning to define its identity.

Among them was department store owner George Marston, whose historic house still stands today as a reminder of the generation that shaped early San Diego.

Balboa Park survived. Most cities aren’t that lucky.

The Talking Pictures

By the late 1920s, moviegoing had become one of America’s great obsessions.

Downtown Broadway was growing quickly beneath glowing marquees as audiences lined up outside the Balboa and Spreckels theatres each evening. For years, they had watched silent films accompanied by orchestras, pipe organs, and live sound from inside the theater itself.

Then the voices arrived.

As talking pictures replaced silent films, the shift happened almost overnight — not just in San Diego, but across the country. Theaters rewired their walls. Orchestras were let go. Audiences sat in the dark and listened for the first time.

Downtown San Diego was learning to hear the movies.

On the Air

By the late 1920s, radio still felt like the future.

Inside the Pickwick Hotel, KGB Radio broadcast music, news, and voices across Southern California — reaching families gathered around their sets each evening, adjusting dials through static to find something worth hearing.

High above Broadway, radio antennae stretched from the Pickwick rooftop into the San Diego sky while announcers worked beneath warm studio lights in the floors below.

Years later, a young Art Linkletter would begin his broadcasting career at KGB — inside this same building.

For a time, the hotel stood at the center of both the city and its airwaves.

Room 410

In his first season as a bellman, Matteo had learned to read a guest in the time it took the elevator to arrive.

The woman in Room 410 had come in on the late Pickwick from Los Angeles — hat box, leather trunk, no one waiting for her at the desk. She tipped in coins and didn’t ask about the dining room.

He set her luggage inside the door, left the key on the bureau, and pulled the curtain against the Broadway lights below.

Whatever had brought her to San Diego, it hadn’t been easy.

He didn’t ask. That was the job.
