Not all heroes wear capes. Some are green, muddy, and tangled, and they’re proving to be billion-dollar bodyguards.

Follow our satellite-tagged sea turtles with SCCF’s new turtle tracking website! 🐢📍

Currently featuring loggerheads Queen Tutt and MumSea, the website shows you the path of each turtle since it was tagged, with a timestamp of its most recent known location. A huge thanks to our partners at Hammerhead Technology Corp, who generously donated their time and expertise to bring this website to life. We also couldn’t have done it without the donors who supported the cost of new satellite tags!

“A lot of the research on sea turtles is conducted while they're nesting because they're much easier to access on beaches, but since they spend most of their lives at sea, there is still so much we don't know,” said SCCF Coastal Wildlife Director Kelly Sloan. “We hope this tracking website will help engage the public in sea turtles and further promote conservation efforts in our area.”

🐢 Our daily sea turtle monitoring began this morning!

Now through Oct. 31, SCCF staff and trained volunteers will survey 18 miles of beaches on Sanibel and Captiva every morning to look for signs of sea turtle nesting activity. When a nest is found, it’s staked off and monitored daily throughout incubation. Help sea turtles thrive this year by following the tips below:

🌃 After 9, it's turtle time! Turn off/shield all lights visible from the beach, which disorient baby sea turtles
⛱️ Remove obstacles to nesting females such as beach furniture, toys, and sandcastles
🪣 Fill in holes, which can trap sea turtles, especially hatchlings
🚮 Pick up all trash on the beach. Litter can attract predators, and sea turtles can ingest or become entangled by discarded trash and fishing line
🚷 Keep at least 10 feet from marked sea turtle nests and do not disturb nesting females
🐢 Call the SCCF Sea Turtle Hotline at 978-728-3663 (978-SAVE-ONE) to report issues with nests, nesting turtles, or hatchlings.

SCCF’s sea turtle monitoring activities are conducted under Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission permits MTP-047 and MTP-170.
