Sanibel’s sea turtle nesting season is slowing down, but it is not over quite yet!
Over the past week, SCCF documented one new nest, along with exciting hatchling activity and nest inventories. Sanibel nests have produced 24,867 hatchlings to the sea this season, including 511 green turtle hatchlings.
The season has also brought significant challenges, with 356 nests depredated by coyotes. Across Florida, loggerhead nesting is tracking toward a possible record, leatherback nesting has already surpassed its previous record, and green turtle nesting remains strong. Florida has even documented its first confirmed olive ridley nest.
If you are enjoying Sanibel’s beaches, please help protect sea turtles by keeping them dark, clean, and obstacle-free at night.
Sea turtle nesting activities are conducted under SCCF Marine Turtle Permit #047.
