Scott Chapin has been crushing it on the cyclocross bike so far this season!

Despite a late start to his cyclocross season after a summer full of enduro racing, Scott Chapin made his third podium appearance in as many attempts last weekend. On a fast course that snaked under the lights of San Jose’s Lake Cunningham Park Scott rode a calculated race to cross the line second a...

After a dry and dusty Lobster Cup last weekend, Mother Nature made sure to keep things exciting for racers at this weekend’s Surf City All Hallows ‘Cross event. Cyclocross racing returned to Santa Cruz over the weekend with the second edition of the Rock Lobster Cup and Factory Racing put their home-field advantage to good use. On a brutally rough course the team powered their way to two wins and gave the out-of-towners a lesson in having a good time.

Santa Cruz Factory Racing Takes on The Ashland Mountain Challenge!

Short and sweet, long and arduous, the Ashland Mountain Challenge was many things to many people, but everyone who raced July 16, in Ashland, OR agreed—it was wicked.

Doubles, rock gardens, and fast descents, the race tested and sometimes tortured the bodies and minds of Santa Cruz Factory Racing, but the team made up of Santa Cruz Bicycles’ staff, prevailed and found the podium in five different categories.

Kathy Pruitt, a vet of the race circuit, and Scott Chapin, whose forklift skills rival what he does on the trail, laid it down in Pro Women and Pro Men. Pruitt took second and Chapin finished fourth. Bo MacArthur was also doing his thing in Pro Men and finished 21st.

There was plenty of competition in Pro, but Chapin explained that the team took it easy and concentrated on barbequing El Salchichero tri-tip and kicking back at casa de Markling.
“The trails were super fun, but it was so dry; like kitty litter on sand paper,” Chapin mention Monday morning as he loaded a container truck. “We did a lot of shuttling during practice and drove a lot, so we just tried to keep it mellow and focus on the race.”

Sam Markling, whose family graciously hosted the team of 15 filthy riders, brought the thunder and pushed his way to second in Pro Men. A local of Ashland who found himself stranded in Santa Cruz, CA, Markling crushed the trails of his home town and proved his knowledge of the mountain. Jorge Bayley was also out on the trail Saturday and took 7th in Open Men.

In Expert Men, roommates Kyle “Speedbump” Harder and Kyle Bowman played absolutely no games and finished fourth and fifth. The Kyles had solid placements this year, boosting the team’s overall standing in the California Enduro Series to seventh. Seymour also netted the team a few points and finished 11th. Nic Bean, a recent addition to the team, finished 5th in Expert Boys U18. Forrest Wade was also out racing with the crew and took fifth in Beginner Men. “I've found that I excel at the more physical, aerobic races,” Speedbump said as he packed a Tallboy Monday. “The final overall times were longer than any other race so far and the third stage ranged from 15-18 minutes; it felt like it would never end.”

As always thanks to those that support the team including El Salchichero, Santa Cruz Bicycles, Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing, Uncommon Brewers, and Farmhouse Cultures.
