12,000 years of New Mexico history in one easy mile: Pecos Pueblo, a 1717 Spanish mission, and a reconstructed kiva on the Ancestral Sites Trail

Start at Pecos National Historical Park Visitor Center (Ancestral Sites Trail, Pecos, NM 87552 • 505-954-2002 • nps.gov/peco). Pick up the trail guide, explore the exhibits, then stroll the 1-mile loop. Free to visit, family-friendly, dog-friendly, and gorgeous at sunrise/sunset. Plan 2–3 hours; weekday mornings mean cooler temps and fewer crowds. Current rating: 4.9

Make your base at Rancheros de Santa Fe Campground—our serene, 22-acre, forest-like retreat where nature meets culture under the piñon pines

Think campfire, not stadium. Light where you need it, darkness where you want it.

At Rancheros de Santa Fe Campground—our 22-acre, wooded retreat just 11 miles from downtown—we use warm, downward-facing, shielded fixtures so the Milky Way stays bright and neighbors sleep easy. Less glare, more stars, and a calmer night for people and wildlife.

Why it matters

Small tilt, huge Milky Way. Use red porch lights and aim them downward to keep the stars bright for your neighbors.

Quick low-glare tips:
• Swap to amber/red LEDs ≤2200 K
• Use full-cutoff shields; keep bulbs below the fixture rim
• Go lower lumen (250–450) + motion sensors or timers
• Dim after 10 p.m. and check that light stays on your path—not in a window

Why it matters: less sky-glow, better night vision, safer walking with less glare, fewer bugs, and real energy savings—so everyone enjoys the Milky Way together.

At Rancheros de Santa Fe Campground, 11 miles from downtown on 22 wooded acres along Historic Route 66, we keep nights night-sky friendly with red lights and downward angles—preserving that serene, starry-sky vibe under the piñon and juniper.
