🍁 The trees are changing, the air is getting cooler, and peak color is almost here! Here are some of our favorite places to see in the UP without having to go too far!

just a short drive from Holiday Inn Express is Mission Hill Overlook. There you will find some spectacular views of Spectacle Lake, Lake Superior and miles and miles of red, orange, and gold.

If you're up for a little exploring, make your way over to Monocle Lake. There is a 2-mile trail where you can wind your way through the forest and enjoy the views of Monocle Lake. It’s a fairly easy hike and a great way to immerse yourself in the fall color.

And don't forget about the view right here in town. Head to the top of the Tower of History for a 360 degree view of fall in the Soo. From 210 feet up, you'll see the St. Marys River, Sugar Island, Canada and miles of UP forest.

The best part? You can do as much or as little as you want. Take the drive. Go for a hike. Stop for dinner. Watch a freighter. It's fall in the U.P. You really can't go wrong.

Runners, we can’t wait to welcome you to the Soo! 🏃‍♀️🏃

The Sault International Festival of Races is coming September 26–27, and it’s one of the most unique weekends in the U.P.

Saturday’s 5-Mile Bridge Run takes runners across the International Bridge, high above the St. Marys River with views of the Soo Locks, freighters and both Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Ontario. On Sunday, runners can take on the Half Marathon, 5K Run or 5K Walk.

If you’re traveling to the Soo for the races, why not come a little early or stay an extra day? There’s still plenty happening on the water!

🚢 Take a Sunset Locks Tour and experience the Soo Locks from the water.

🍂 On September 26, the Fall Boatnerd Cruise offers one last freighter-focused cruise of the season, with Great Lakes ships, fall scenery and sunset views along the St. Marys River.

And when your legs are ready for a break, make Holiday Inn Express Sault Ste. Marie your home base. Relax in a clean, comfortable, newly renovated room, take a dip in our indoor pool, and wake up to a complimentary hot breakfast before another day in the Soo.

Hit the trails in September in the Soo. 🍂

Cooler days, fewer bugs and the first hints of fall color make this a great time to get outside. Here are two of our favorites:

🌲 Algonquin Pathway — Just about 5 miles west of Sault Ste. Marie, this trail system offers roughly 9 miles of interconnected loops through hardwood and conifer forests, ridges and wetlands. Choose a shorter loop for an easy walk or spend a few hours exploring more of the pathway. The rolling terrain adds a little challenge without making it an extreme hike.

🛶 Voyageur Island — Getting there is half the fun! Launch a kayak or paddleboard from Rotary Park then enjoy a 30-minute paddle to the island. Once you arrive, explore the island's boardwalks and rustic trails, look for wildlife, enjoy views of the St. Marys River and maybe even catch a freighter passing by.

After a day outside, head back to Holiday Inn Express Sault Ste. Marie for a swim in the indoor pool and a clean, comfortable, newly renovated room. Then fuel up with our complimentary hot breakfast before tomorrow's adventure.

Everyone loves a day on the river! 🌊

Riverfest is back, and this year's celebration is bigger than ever. Join the fun on Saturday, August 15 at Rotary Island for a full day of outdoor family fun in Sault Ste. Marie.

Here's what's happening:

8:00 AM – 5K Color Run
10:00 AM – Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga
11:00 AM–3:00 PM – Riverfest activities, including:
- Slip-n-Slide
- St. Marys River Float
- Paddleboarding 101
- Kayaking 101
- Waterslide

🌅 6:00 PM – Two-Hour Sunset Dinner Cruise

After a full day on the river, head back to Holiday Inn Express Sault Ste Marie and relax. Take a dip in the indoor pool, unwind in our newly renovated, modern rooms, and wake up to our famous complimentary hot breakfast before heading out to explore more of the Soo.

30 minutes from Sault Ste. Marie…

If you’re looking for an easy day trip, Point Iroquois Lighthouse is well worth the drive.

Take in the views from the top of the lighthouse, walk the sandy Lake Superior shoreline, and keep an eye out for colorful agates—or come back after dark and search for Yooperlites.

The drive is part of the experience, winding through the shoreline of Michigan’s beautiful eastern Upper Peninsula.

After a day on Lake Superior, come back to Holiday Inn Express Sault Ste. Marie to relax, recharge, and start planning tomorrow’s adventure.
