The backwaters are currently low and filled with plant life. This makes boating on the lake challenging but provides a great environment for wildlife. Backwater marshes are vital wetlands that act as natural shock absorbers, water filters, and biodiversity hotspots for our planet. Spring Lake is part of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. It will soon be filled with migratory birds as a safe place for them to land along the “Mississippi Flyway”, a major bird migration route in North America that follows the Mississippi River from the Arctic and Canada down to the Gulf of Mexico and South America.
As a campground, we are guests and lucky observers to the plants and wildlife of this area. Our mission is to be a refuge our campers as well! 🏕️

Here’s a chance to volunteer and support a beautiful local landmark! Wierenga's Heritage Canyon is a really great place.

Time to start getting the Canyon ready for our upcoming Fall Festival slated for October 3rd 2026. We are looking for some volunteers to help with some clean up and decorating. We can work with your schedule so its a 'help when you can' time line. Hit me up.... Early American Crafters

It is always great to support events like this and see kids getting excited about plants, bugs, and birds! We are lucky to be in such a beautiful area. Thanks to the Stewards of the Upper Mississippi River Refuge and Ranger Jacquelynn and everyone involved. 🦋🌻

We love reading reviews and seeing the photos our campers take and share. Sometimes it feels like we want to be doing something more impactful or question what “more” we could be doing but the truth is, simply providing a safe and relaxing place for people to get away and reconnect with nature, their people and pets or by themselves is a pretty big deal. We do a lot behind the scenes in areas of conservation and stewardship, we are trying to grow community and we care a lot about the people we meet here. Being a small, simple, peaceful sanctuary is making an impact. Thank you to those of you who slow down enough to see it. 🏕️
