The oldest road racing circuit in America is a wartime bomber school with most of the buildings taken away.

Construction on Hendricks Field began in July 1941, outside Sebring in Highlands County. It was named in January 1942 for First Lieutenant Laird W. Hendricks Jr., a Florida native and West Point graduate killed while training with the Royal Air Force in England before the United States entered the war. From 1942 to 1945 it ran as a B-17 pilot school under the 76th Flying Training Wing. The airport's own history counts a peak of around 120 Flying Fortresses on the field, more than ten thousand pilots trained, nine fatal crashes and forty-five men killed. The field was deactivated at the end of 1945 and turned over to the City of Sebring on 1 May 1946. ✈️

Alec Ulmann did not come to Sebring looking for a racetrack. Born in Russia in 1903, schooled in Switzerland, an aeronautical engineering graduate of MIT in the class of 1925, he ran an aviation products business in New York and was scouting surplus airfields where war-surplus aircraft could be stored and converted for civilian use. He found miles of concrete runway sitting empty in the scrub. He went to Le Mans in 1950, saw what endurance racing looked like, and brought the idea back.

On 31 December 1950 the Sam Collier Memorial Grand Prix of Endurance ran six hours on those runways, with the corners marked by oil drums and straw bales. It was scored on index of performance rather than distance, so the little Crosley Hot Shot of Fritz Koster and Ralph Deshon needed 288.3 miles while the Ferraris needed 363.6. The Crosley won. The first twelve-hour race followed on 15 March 1952. 🏁

Seventy-five years of racing, held on concrete poured for a war.
