Came for the red rocks. Stayed for the art. Still looking for his spaceship. 👽🎨

Sedona has always attracted creative spirits. From its galleries and all of its unexpected corners, this little artistic haven has a personality all its own. We're pretty happy that Sky Ranch Lodge gets to be a part of it.

The short answer is rust.

Sedona's sand is pale quartz, close to white. Every grain
of it carries a coat of hematite, which is iron oxide, which
is the same thing that forms on a bicycle left out in the
rain. That reaction has been running here for roughly 270
million years.

The layer doing most of the work has a name, the Schnebly
Hill Formation, and it is named for the same family the
town is. The pale caps on top of Bell Rock and Cathedral
Rock are a different rock entirely, old sand dunes with
almost no iron in them.

The part we find hardest to hold in our heads: none of it
was pushed up. It sat under 12,000 feet of other rock, the
land rose, and the weather spent 80 million years taking
away everything that was not these buttes.

Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, Oak Creek, the spots you've been pinning are all public land. You can't reserve them, you'll share them with hikers, and the Wilderness ones don't allow ceremonies at all.

So the couples with the smoothest days do it the local way: say their vows at a private venue with the view, then slip out for golden-hour portraits at the rocks. The privacy and the postcard, both.
