The last Sunday of the summer light and of August, and we’re spending it in the pool.

September flips something here. The heat lets go, the light gets longer and lower, and by October the mesa starts doing the thing that gets people to book a year ahead.

Which is the actual point of this post. October fills first, then the first two weeks of November. If red rocks in the fall is on the list, this is the window.

Family owned on Airport Mesa since 1982. Same view Forbes wrote about. Still nobody rushing you through it.

The simple things are so underrated. Taking in the view, a breath of fresh air, that post-hike feeling of bliss, quality time with loved ones, and forgetting about your phone for a while.

A day in Sedona that costs almost nothing. Sunrise on Airport Mesa. The Chapel. A stupa most visitors never find. The scenic byway with the windows down. Tlaquepaque in the afternoon. And the darkest sky of any town its size, free every clear night since Sedona became the 8th International Dark Sky Community in 2014.

The only line item is parking. $5 for a Red Rock Pass, or nothing at all if you take the free shuttle.

Everyone comes to Sedona for the rock. Nobody expects the shade.

Six acres of botanical garden and relaxing viewpoints on top of a mesa, tended by the dedicated team at our family-owned hotel with care. Sycamore, juniper, roses that should not work at this elevation and do anyway. After the monsoon, the whole thing goes loud green against the red.

It is the most underrated 20 minutes on the property, and it costs nothing if you are staying here.

Save this for your slow morning. Stop by and see us for a coffee in the morning.

Four vortex sites. One of them you genuinely cannot drive to most days of the week. But what if you never had to get in the car? 👀

Cathedral Rock closes its lot Thursday through Sunday while the free shuttle runs. Boynton Canyon just reopened after the Pocket Fire closures. Bell Rock is the forgiving one. And Airport Mesa has the smallest lot of all four, which matters less if you're already on the mesa staying at Sky Ranch Lodge.

Trails are free. Parking is $5. The shuttle is free and skips the pass entirely.

The Perseids peak tomorrow night and 2026 is the year to actually go outside for it.

New moon on August 12 means zero moonlight for the entire window. Under a genuinely dark sky that means somewhere between 50 and 100 meteors an hour, with the best rates between 1am and 4am. No telescope. No app. A blanket, 30 minutes for your eyes to adjust, and a phone you keep face down.

Sedona became the eighth International Dark Sky Community in the world in 2014, which is the technical way of saying the town changed its light fixtures so you could see this.

We are on a mesa above town with six acres of garden and very few lights. Bring a blanket.
