Back to the building process, specifically the foam application. The peanut was covered with tar paper and then large blocks of foam were used to cover the whole frame of the structure. Once the foam was in place, it was carefully shaped into a peanut form using a hot wire cutter. This process involved a significant amount of time cutting and frequently stepping back to assess the shape, ensuring that the desired contours and proportions were achieved.

Next up: Framing! The peanut was built in Parkdale, Oregon and all of the wood used in the framing was milled locally by (Hood River, Oregon). It’s beginning to take shape at this point and looking more and more like a peanut shell! *This is definitely a simplified version of the process but gives a little ‘behind the scenes’ of how it all came together.

So…how is a peanut built anyway? Did you know there are 4 types of peanuts (Virginia, Runner, Spanish, Valencia)? The Texas Peanut Pod happens to be of the Runner variety. We mailed a box of peanuts to the Schofields’ so they could find the perfect peanut. They found one in that bunch and that was their prototype throughout the whole process. It was built to scale and shaped based off that one little peanut.

Oh and lots of steel! Once the general shape and size was decided, the frame was built.

Sometimes crazy ideas lead to memorable adventures. Annnd this might be our nuttiest idea yet! But..oh my goodness it has been FUN! After many emails, FaceTimes, phone calls, and drawings… IT’S HERE!!! Sharolyn and Chris Schofield of Schofield Designs made all of our peanut dreams come true! They truly are master artists and I’m amazed at their creativity and ingenuity.

As we know, Gaines County is the top peanut-producing county in Texas, so naturally a giant, 30 foot peanut just makes sense (and everything is bigger in Texas anyway)! We want to provide a unique lodging experience with a twist. Right here in Seminole! Your own little haven…in a nutshell! With all that being said, we have lots of fun plans for the inside. We hope you’ll follow along as we finish it out!
