Let’s talk poppies- the official flower of Memorial Day

I’ve sheared a few pass along plants in The last few weeks

Pass alongs sometimes come in other forms- like seed.

Lonnie was gifted some double poppy seed a few years ago from a place we were visiting up North.

I planted the seed and had a beautiful crop of double pink poppies!
They continued for a few years- nice, thick & double blooms.

Over time, even though the plants are reseeding,
The blooms have gone back to red single blossoms. They have reverted.

I still enjoy the tall stalks with the bright red blooms each May. Poppies. The official Memorial Day flowers.

Thank you to those that serve and gave.

Sundays bring back fond childhood memories of spending the afternoon with family. Parents, Grandparents, Cousins, Aunts (in Southern speak that’s Ants not Aaonts)& uncles.

We would gather together at homes of family members that had space inside or outside (seasonal) or both. I was blessed enough in Ga to live in a smallish house on 10 acres.

I had talked last month about our Easter egg hunts. We hunted individually wrapped Brachs candy eggs that at the time they were new everyone thought were nasty tasting. Being the ingenious frugal family that never wastes anything and loves to save $(gets ya farther in life!) we kept the eggs in a bag in the freezer until the next Easter to hide. In fact l think for at least 20 years (who knows-kinda like bread starter- how old is it REALLY)

This morning l received a picture to commemorate the Egg hunt of 2004. The proof. The part to show yes it was true. I thing the disposable plate was also proof of frugality in the family.

Been a little occupied in the garden/yard -

Going to share more pass along plant info today -

My Pop was a farmer & Dairyman/Poultry farmer.
He also was a vegetable gardener even into his 80s . He & my Mam tag teamed the veggies-he planted & she cooked what he grew!
One point in their lives they started growing specialty roses & Iris. Jackson Perkins to be specific. Hybridized specialty plants -
Sooo beautiful and the iris were in long rows. Lots of iris-Mam would cut them & bring them inside or share with others.
After my Grands became too aged to tend to their 50 acres in Ga, we wanted to keep some of their memories alive to share with our own little families.

We dug up a number of plants, the iris being one.
I lived in Ga a number of years afterwards. The bulbs l transplanted lived & bloomed - but had reverted to solid white.

After moving to Historic Seaton Springs Farm one of my cousins asked if l wanted some of Pop’s iris that he had. Seems his needed thinning out.
Nancy & Keith to the rescue! They shipped a box full!

I planed an entire bed of my Pop’s irises in Tennessee and they were now pass along plants. Here’s pics - yes the heritage lives on. You can see from my front porch and
I now offer weddings in the Iris garden for all to enjoy
