According to Ken Weathers of WATE (an astonishingly appropriate name), a new system of winter weather will be coming in this coming weekend. Ken writes:

"WED AFT 1/28/26

***CONFIDENCE IS INCREASING FOR SNOW FRI INTO SAT***

-WHAT: Forecast data continues to show the probabilities for some snow in our area.
-WHEN: Later FRI into SAT ("EXACT" timing still not "certain")
-WHERE: The MOST likely areas to see snow will be near the Smokies, and LEAST likely will be near the Plateau (Knoxville is right in the middle, but we think there will at least be some: 60%-80% of seeing 1"+).
-HOW MUCH: We'll have a better idea of totals tomorrow, but "SIGNIFICANT" totals are most likely in the Smokies with "SOME" impacts elsewhere.
This is still a developing system, but we are seeing better signals for snow in our area. This is NOT like the last system, as anything we see fall this time will be ALL snow due to the Arctic air pushing in with this system (NO freezing rain or sleet).
In fact, this is an unusual type of event for us, because with such cold and dry air moving in, it will take LESS moisture to make MORE snow (it will be "light and fluffy", not great for compacting and making snowballs).

*WEATHER LESSON: In most snow events we see here, we get a "10:1 ratio" of liquid to snow, meaning for every .10" of liquid, we would see 1" of snow (common for our part of the Country).
But since this air is so cold, we will see HIGHER snow totals with the SAME amount of liquid, meaning the same .10" of liquid would give 1.5" to 2" of snow (or a higher ratio of 15:1 or 20:1 due to the colder air).

⚠️Another MORE significant thing to take away from this system is just how COLD we will be this weekend🥶

SAT: LOWS in the mid-upper teens and HIGHS in the lower 20s
SUN: LOWS in the single digits to near 10° and HIGH in the mid to upper 20s
