Looking for a new place to explore in the Smokies?
Cosby is one of the quieter, less‑visited areas of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This peaceful, forested corner of the park offers several recreation opportunities for all visitors. A beautifully resurfaced road winds through the trees and leads to hiking, picnicking, camping, and more.
Hikes in Cosby
Cosby Nature Trail: A short and rewarding 1‑mile loop that meanders through lush forest, crosses charming footlogs, and highlights the area’s remarkable biodiversity and cultural history.
Gabes Mountain Trail to Hen Wallow Falls: This moderate, approximately 4‑mile round‑trip hike, leads you through a dense forest to the stunning 90-foot Hen Wallow Falls—a perfect option if you're chasing waterfalls.
Low Gap Trail / Appalachian Trail to Mount Cammerer: Seeking a full‑day challenge? This strenuous, just over 11‑mile round‑trip route climbs more than 3,000 feet before reaching the historic Mount Cammerer fire tower which offers sweeping views.

Picnicking and Camping
Cosby Campground is ideal for visitors seeking a quieter side of the park. Reservations can be made on recreation.gov. The picnic area is spacious, often uncrowded, and a great place to relax and enjoy lunch in nature. A picnic pavilion is available by reservation or first come, first served when not reserved.
