🎬 The real prison behind The Shawshank Redemption is even more of a story than the movie.
Most people assume “Shawshank” was a real place… and in a way, it was — but it’s actually two real prisons wrapped into one legend.
🏰 The prison you see in the movie is the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio. Built in the late 1800s, it looks like a haunted castle that got sentenced to life. It eventually closed in 1990, and for a while it was decaying and headed toward being torn down… until the movie showed up and turned it into an icon. Now it’s preserved and you can tour it.
🧱 The prison that helped inspire the original story (Stephen King’s novella set in Maine) is often linked to the Maine State Prison in Thomaston — and here’s the twist: that old prison was demolished in 2002.
So the fictional Shawshank lives on… and the “movie Shawshank” still stands… but one of the real-life inspirations is gone.
Kind of fitting for a story about time, survival, and what we leave behind. 🔥
