Since 2008, The Gillum House Bed & Breakfast in Shinnston, West Virginia has been blessed to provide free rooms to Veterans in honor of Veterans Day to thank them AND Especially their spouse for their Service ti this Country and its Citizens. In 2010, we took it nationwide and the Association of Lodging Professionals (ALP) has sponsored it as part of their service o the industry. For several reasons, it has been decided to put B & Bs For Vets on hiatus. THIS IS THE BACKGROUND for the REASON for this Post.
The Gillum House WILL continue providing the 2 rooms for 3-nights that we have done since 2010 as long as I am owner/host and it IS BOOKED for 2026already!
The REASON:
As anyone who has come here over Veterans Day can attest - there has never been nor will be a charge for that stay. HOWEVER, I am about to ask, IF YOU WISH TO - could you consider sending a donation to Mountaineer Military Museum in Weston, WV (address is 345 Center Ave., Weston, WV 26452). This Museum was started at the grave of a Vietnam soldier from a Promise made by his best friend who drew Germany after they finished boot camp - "I WILL NEVER LET YOU BE FORGOTTEN". He passed away last year and his widow (and "partner in crime") continues. The Museum survives on Donations and sales in the Quartermaster Store - there is NO admission fee and it is open (normally) during the season on Saturdays or by appointment (as some Veteran guests found true recently). The storm and flash flooding of July 22 DEVASTED the Museum and Quartermaster store. The Museum is now closed for the season. wonderful volunteers have been helping her with clean-up BUT there are bills to pay - utilities, etc. PLUS mitigation of the flood damage.
IF you care to help, please send a donation so she can reopen in 2027. usually do not join the gimmee line we all get. THIS is different for me because the museum is so very awesome.
