Calloway Corners Bed & Breakfast

Calloway Corners Bed & Breakfast Historic Bed & Breakfast. After meeting one of the authors in 1989, the founders decided to use the fictitious name in the books for the Bed & Breakfast.

Empty for years, the house became the birthplace of the fictitious Calloway sisters; Mariah, Jo Tess & Eden, and was used on the cover art of each of the first four Harlequin Romance novels bearing their names. In 1993, Harlequin coordinated a re-release of the books with a contest for the readers, the winner to receive a weekend for two at Calloway Corners along with a cash prize and limousine s

ervice to Shreveport and Bossier City. While Harlequin was putting the finishing touches on the contest, the required administrative procedures were put in place to make Calloway Corners a "real" town. Fiction became fact on February 2, 1993 in Calloway Corners, Louisiana. Two rooms are available for your enjoyment; Mariah's Room (overlooking the water garden and ponds) and Eden's Room. Both rooms feature king size four poster beds, private baths and cozy gas log fireplaces for cooler weather. Rooms are $100.00 a night ($50.00 a night for weekly corporate guests). A full breakfast is served each morning at 9:00 am (Continental breakfast for corporate guests can be earlier). Afternoon refreshments are served at 4:00 pm each day. Morning coffee or hot tea is ready by 7:00 am, upon request. Either offering can be enjoyed in the comfort of the house or outside on the front porch, beside the water garden ponds or on the back porch (Mariah's Room only) looking out over the water garden and ponds. If it's peace and rest you crave, you can enjoy a leisurely stroll around the beautiful old grounds with its classic oak and magnolia trees and lovely gardens, or sit in one of the swings and just relax. Centrally located twenty-eight miles east of Shreveport and the excitement of Riverboats, thoroughbred horseracing at Louisiana Downs, and the end of year Independence Bowl Game, Calloway Corners is only a short hour from historic Natchitoches, "City of Lights", and less than an hour from many other attractions in Arcadia (Bonnie & Clyde), Haughton, Magnolia, Arkansas (Blossom Festival), Minden (Germantown Festival), Ruston (Louisiana Tech), and Spring Hill (Lumberjack Festival), just to mention a few. Because of the size and intimate atmosphere of Calloway Corners, we ask that you observe the NO SMOKING policy anywhere inside the house, including the guest rooms. When making reservations, please include specific date, the number of nights of your stay, your estimated time of arrival and the number of persons in your party. Only two adults are allowed per room. No children and no pets, please. We encourage you to make reservations as early as possible in order to insure room availability. Weekly corporate reservations are also accepted. A 7 day notice of cancellation is required, so notify us immediately if your plans change.

From the vantage point of flight, the world appears different, calm, quiet, and almost magical. Human occupation gives way to the natural majesty of mountains, rivers, forests, and lakes. Looking below at this wonder of nature, crafted over thousands of years, and marveling at the ability to see it in all its natural beauty is truly an awesome view to behold.

As the aerodynamic forces of thrust overcome drag and weight to lift the aircraft off the earth’s surface, the same forces under the pilot’s control bring it down. Pulling back on the throttle or rolling off the power, adding drag in the form of landing gear or flaps, or lowering the collective and gently pulling back on the cyclic helps gravity bring the aircraft back to its bond with the earth.

The pilot lines his aircraft up with the distant runway and, drawing on hours of experience, manages its controls and power to gently bring it safely down onto the runway. The flight ends with the chirp of tires or the transition from flight to hover. Once the aircraft is shut down and secured, the pilot’s work is done.

But, the joy of flight remains in his memory.

When the door of the colorful Braniff International 707 opened at Biên Hòa Air Base, we were introduced to Vietnam’s unique smell: a combination of cordite, jet fuel, smoke, cooking odors, burning human f***s, and the most oppressive humidity I had ever experienced. We had just been exposed to the “burn pit” that was South Vietnam. (For you nitpickers, the U.S. Military and some of its allies were still using WWII bombs and other ordnance, hence “the smell of cordite”)

I have never been one to journal or take notes. My outlook on life has always been, “Do what needs to be done today, then move on to tomorrow.” I had been reluctant to write a book about my year in Vietnam since it would all be based on the memories of what occurred fifty-six years ago. However, my counselor told me it would be good therapy, so I’m writing it. With a few exceptions, the book will not include dates, times, or exact chronological order.

I did benefit from internet sources that helped confirm some dates and events in which I participated. Most of the photos are from my own collection. Since the opinions, data, and recollections shared in this book are from 56-plus years ago, there may be errors, omissions, or incorrect information. Any corrections or additional information is invited. Smart-assed comments are not.

I’ve finally done it. After 56 years, I have finally written about my year in Vietnam. For those of you who bought my book, The Joy of Flight, there is necessarily a small amount of overlap.

After more than 24 years, there is now a cookbook from Calloway Corners B&B. I spent all of last winter writing this cookbook and gained 15 pounds testing recipes. It is 507 pages with 498 wonderfully unique and delicious recipes, historical information, quotes, pictures and other ramblings. It's just $20.00, if you buy from me, plus shipping if appropriate. This is an inexpensive gift that can be used for a lifetime then handed down to future generations. It is that unique and one-of-a-kind! My friend, Marie Golden Boquet from Metarie, LA called and told my wife that it was the only cookbook she would ever need. It's listed on Amazon as MEMORIES: RECIPES FROM CALLOWAY CORNERS, LOUISIANA for $20.00. It's also on Kindle and there's a special color edition for $75.00 or $45.00 if you buy from me. So, please tell your friends, family and whoever.
