ing quality meals at fast pace for train passengers of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. The Harvey House venture closed in 1942, but the facility continued as a passenger and freight depot for many years. The building went into disrepair after ATS&F ceased operations from Slaton and was facing demolition when a group of locals and others with close connections mounted a successful effort to save and revive this landmark of Slaton and the Lubbock area. Place setting at Harvey House of SlatonNow in operation for more than ten years, the Slaton Harvey House provides Lubbock area travelers one of only two Bed and Breakfast options for Lubbock. We also offer a unique setting for family or company events, and an unforgettable backdrop for marital vows or receptions.

Today, July 30, is National Cheesecake Day. As if we need a national day to devour this delicious dish, it will indeed be a day worth celebrating!

Over the years, the Slaton Harvey House hosted thousands of passengers who stopped in for a famous Fred Harvey meal. Some passengers would have been lucky enough to have Cheesecake as the dessert of the day.

One of the recipes in “The Harvey House Cookbook: Memories of Dining along the Santa Fe Railroad” is for a cheesecake by Mr. Ibsch, a head baker from California. His recipe and many others found in this book can be purchased at the gift shop inside the Slaton Harvey House.

My favorite topping is turtle, a sinfully delicious combination of chocolate, pecans, and caramel. What is your favorite Cheesecake topping?
