Solomons Island is both literally and figuratively built on oysters. Few towns can claim that their very existence is so directly tied to one tasty little bivalve.

When Isaac Solomon arrived here in 1867 and began developing the community that would eventually bear his name, he didn’t come for the beautiful sunsets, the great fishing, or even our famous blue crabs. He came for oysters. The oyster industry transformed this little Sandy Island at the mouth of the Patuxent into a bustling watermen’s community, and generations of people in Solomons made their living harvesting, shucking, packing, and shipping oysters from the river and bay.

Next week, Solomons celebrates that heritage with the Second Annual Shuck It! Solomons Oyster Trail. There are plenty of oyster festivals around the Chesapeake, but this one feels particularly appropriate. Oysters aren’t simply something we eat in Solomons; they are wrapped up in the history, culture, and geography of the island.

On October 10, start your day at the Calvert Marine Museum for Patuxent River Appreciation Day, then wander around Solomons. Try some delicious local food, visit the shops, discover businesses you may never have stopped in before, check out the scarecrows around town, and, of course, eat a few oysters along the way.

Come Visit Solomons Maryland, and spend a day exploring a picturesque watermen’s community that, more than 150 years after Isaac Solomon arrived, is still Anchored in Charm.
