The Keys may freeze. but stays liquid.

The Lake is extremely deep, so when water near the surface cools, it becomes more dense and sinks to the bottom. At the same time, warmer water from below rises to take its place. Our winters aren't long enough for the entire water column to reach freezing temperatures, thus no ice skating from to .

Water in the is shallow enough to freeze, but... See those ripples in the unfrozen spot? Those are from a laminar flow aeration system (LFA) installed to keep aquatic invasive species (nasty weeds) from growing on the bottom - one part of a bigger program to keep invasive plants from turning Lake Tahoe green. The churn from the LFA makes that spot in the Keys behave like the Lake's waters by forcing them to mix.

Fall is the perfect time to enjoy Tahoe’s hiking and biking trails without the crowds. This weekend we biked up to Star Lake. And then to Northstar to ride the lifts up and bike down. 🚴🏼‍♂️⛰

Adventure Mountain is a great place to spend a couple hours sledding down groomed runs. It’s located 15 minutes from our house. We all had a fun time here this morning!

First snowfall of this ski season! ❄️🌨❄️
It was about 6”, which was enough snow for sledding in the backyard. 🛷
More snow is coming tonight! 8-16”!!! 😳

The best pumpkin patch that we’ve ever been to is en route to Tahoe. They have the most a-maze-ing corn maze, which they estimate would take 1.5 hours to get through all three! 😳 We did the shortest one (20 mins), rode a train, avoided the haunted house, drank apple cider, shot pumpkins... There’s so much to do here, and we had a great time. 🌽☠️🎃👻

Another fun stop on the way to Lake Tahoe is the Jelly Belly factory. You can take a free tour and learn about the history of Jelly Belly, find out why it takes over a week to make a single bean, and see thousands of beans whizzing by on conveyor belts. Afterward, hit up the candy shop, sample any of their flavors, and load up on your family’s favorite beans. Ours are red apple, 7-Up, chocolate pudding, and bo**er (our kids are gross). Also, jelly bean art!
