💔 A rare whale died after repeatedly being pushed back into the Gulf by well-meaning beachgoers on the Texas coast, prompting marine mammal experts to issue an urgent reminder to the public.

Over the past two days, the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network responded from Galveston to Port Aransas to assist a stranded melon-headed whale, a deep-water species that is rarely seen close to shore.

Officials say the whale repeatedly stranded and was returned to the water by people who were simply trying to help. However, experts say stranded whales and dolphins are usually on the beach because they are sick, injured, or in distress. Pushing them back into the water can prolong their suffering and delay the medical assessment they urgently need.

When trained responders arrived, the whale was evaluated with veterinary assistance. Due to its condition and the lack of rehabilitation options for this species, the difficult decision was made to humanely euthanize the animal.

A necropsy has been completed, and additional samples are being analyzed to help determine why the whale stranded.

🐋 If you ever encounter a stranded whale or dolphin:

• Do NOT push it back into the water. • Keep a safe distance and give the animal space. • If possible, provide shade while waiting for trained responders. • Immediately report the stranding by calling 1-800-9MAMMAL (1-800-962-6625) anywhere in Texas.

Many people who helped this whale had good intentions, but wildlife experts hope this heartbreaking case will educate Texans on the safest way to help marine mammals in distress.
