Angel was found on the side of the road and brought to HES by a Good Samaritan. She was in active labor. This poor kitty, only 6 months old, was just a baby herself - a sad but common occurrence for unfixed animals, especially during the peak of breeding season in the spring and summer months.
Angel was immediately seen by our vet team, where she delivered just one single kitten. Sadly, he was born premature, weighing only half of what he should, and passed on his own just hours later.
Angel is still recovering from her ordeal in our medical wing. A cat that is pregnant and still a kitten herself faces significant risks because she is not fully developed both physically and mentally. Angel is underweight and her little body is still growing - she wasn't ready to be a mother, and frankly, she should never have to be.
Cat overpopulation is rampant in our local community and in the nation as a whole. Cats can begin to reproduce as early as 4 months old (the young ones like Angel ending up in similar situations, or worse). If she had been spayed at the proper age, her suffering and that of her kitten could have been avoided.
