๐ŸšจIf you see a flare, call 911! Tonight a boater lost control and sent up multiple flares as his ship tumbled down the coast. Thankfully dozens of residents and guests called 911 giving updates on its location so a rescue team was able to locate the ship as it collided with shore. The captain and his pet cat are both safe on shore. Thank you and for the quick and professional response!

Sand ripples on Beach ๐Ÿ

When a sandy seabed is subject to wave action and the wave orbital motion is strong enough to move sand grains, ripples often appear. The ripples induced by wave action are called โ€œwave ripplesโ€; their characteristics being different from those of the ripples generated by steady flows. The most striking difference between wave ripple fields and current ripple fields is the regularity of the former. Indeed, regular long-crested wave ripple fields are often observed on tidal beaches from which the sea has withdrawn at low water.

The king tide brought us an early gift! Looks like this massive log was out at sea for quite some time. ๐Ÿชต

A king tide is a non-scientific term people often use to describe exceptionally higher than normal tides. King tides are the highest predicted high tide cycles of the year at a given coastal location.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, "higher than normal tides typically occur during a new or full moon and when the Moon is at its perigee, or during specific seasons around the country."

Shrimp boats are on the horizon! ๐Ÿฆ

The First Coast is home to brown, white, pink and rock shrimp. Timucuan Indians settled and thrived on shrimp, as did early European settlers. For centuries it was consumed strictly by locals.

It was the industrial revolution that allowed the rest of the continent to get a taste for the little crustaceans.

Innovations in sh*****ng practices can be traced back to Amelia Island, according to Gray Edenfieldโ€™s book โ€œAmelia Island, Birthplace of the Modern Sh*****ng Industry.โ€ With local net profits in the 1800s, the sh*****ng industry would soon evolve into a national sensation, thanks to the expansion of American railways and the addition of ice cars. Tracks were laid right next to the docks, allowing shrimpers to freight their catch farther north than ever before.

Once the shrimp reached New York, strategic negotiating and clever sales tactics led to a sh*****ng boom. And as New Yorkers deemed shrimp a tasty dish, the rest of the nation followed.

In addition to great birdwatching, the Atlantic coast is a major migration highway for monarch butterflies. North and west winds blow monarchs to the coast, and they travel down the shoreline to avoid the ocean. This results in some of the best monarch-watching in the eastern US. In October we see as many as 500 per hour flying by the house!

What is turtle glass?

Turtle glass is glass that has been tinted to reduce light projection and has a visible light transmittance of 45% or less.

Why is turtle glass required in certain areas?

In 1993, the Florida Department of Natural Resources adopted the Model Lighting Ordinance for Marine Turtle Protection, which requires local municipalities to develop guidelines for controlling beachfront lighting and protecting the habitat of marine turtles. Beachfront residents and businesses are required to close their blinds or drapes and limit outside lights after 9 p.m. during sea turtle nesting season. Turtle glass is the perfect alternative โ€“ limiting light but still allowing residents to protect their view.
