On January 7, 1639, there was a reference to a land grant to settlers John Crow, Thomas Howes, and Anthony Thacher

proclaiming the name of "the lands of Mattacheeset, to be called Yarmouth".

The name Yarmouth comes from the English township located a little over 100 miles north of London,

known for its fishing and shipyards.

Ahoy, history lovers & adventure seekers! Today we're shining a spotlight on one of Cape Cod’s most fascinating treasures: the Whydah Pirate Museum in West Yarmouth just down the street from the Cape Cod Motor Inn Open Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM. Last entry at 3:30 PM.

The Legend of the Whydah
The Whydah Gally was originally built in 1715 as a slave ship and later commandeered by the pirate Samuel “Black Sam” Bellamy

In April 1717, the ship was caught in a violent nor’easter off the coast of Cape Cod and sank, ending its one and only pirate voyage

For centuries, its story remained shrouded in legend until 1984, when explorer Barry Clifford located the wreck.

A key moment came in 1985, when Clifford recovered the ship’s bell inscribed “THE WHYDAH GALLY 1716,” definitively proving its identity

Over time, over 200,000 artifacts have been pulled from the seabed, making this the largest collection of pirate artifacts from a single wreck in the world.

What to Expect at the Museum
The museum opened in June 2016 and is designed to be immersive, educational, and interactive.

Inside, you’ll find:

A walk-through partial replica of the Whydah Gally so you can imagine life aboard a pirate ship.

Galleries filled with real artifacts — coins, weapons, tools, navigational instruments, and even bones and personal items that belonged to crew members

A SeaLab & Learning Center, where conservation work happens, and where you can watch ongoing preservation efforts.

Exhibits that highlight the dual history of the Whydah as both a slave ship turned pirate vessel, creating a complex narrative that doesn’t shy away from the darker parts of the past.

Plan for 60–90 minutes (or more if you really get immersed) to get through everything.

Timed tickets are recommended during peak season.

The museum is accessible to strollers and wheelchairs.

Photography isn’t allowed in the exhibit areas, but there are photo-friendly zones in the lobby.

Be sure to take time in the SeaLab, where conservators work in real time, cleaning and decalcifying artifacts.

Halloween season on Cape Cod is the best time to explore the haunted side of history.
GHOST HUNTING IN BARNSTABLE VILLAGE
Join professional Ghost Hunters for a guided walking tour through the haunted heart of Barnstable Village. Hear chilling tales that still haunt the town today and take part in your very own paranormal investigation at a known haunted cemetery.

This three-hour walking adventure includes stops at famously haunted sites such as The Playhouse, The Hedge House, and the eerie Barnstable House, which is better known by locals as The House of 11 Ghosts. Originally built in Scituate in 1713 and moved to Barnstable in 1716, this historic home is believed to host up to eleven spirits, including a young girl named Lucy who is said to have drowned in the basement well, a woman in white, and a sea captain. Visitors have reported footsteps, cold spots, and even full-bodied apparitions.

The night ends inside the Old Jail, built in the 1690s by order of the Massachusetts Bay Colony Courts and the oldest wooden jail in the US, it's said to be actively haunted. . The site once held pirates and dangerous criminals and over the years, countless visitors have witnessed strange sights and sounds. SOme believe its ghostly residents never left and visitors report disembodied voices, rattling chains, and moving shadows.

It may be October on the Cape but it's the perfect time to get in the water. Most kayak rentals are open until mid October.

Why not try kayaking in nearby Bass River or Swan River ?
Bass River is located between Dennis and Yarmouth (that's us!) on the southern side of the Cape. This tidal estuary is the perfect place for both beginners as well as for experienced paddlers. The waters are calm and winding, with lots to look at and experience. The Swan Pond River entry is located off Route 28 in Dennis Port and wanders its way past islands and acres of conservation land to reach the tidal flats and sandbars of the Nantucket Sound.



Tips for Kayaking On the Cape in October

Dress in Layers: Wear moisture-wicking fabrics and waterproof outer layers to stay warm and dry against the cooler October air.

Wear a Life Jacket: A life jacket is essential for safety on any kayaking trip, especially in potentially colder water.

Consider Waterproof Gloves: Waterproof gloves will help you maintain a good grip on your paddle and prevent your hands from getting cold.

Check Conditions: Always check the weather and tide conditions before heading out, as wind and tidal changes can affect water safety, especially near inlets

Respect Regulations: While personal use kayaks don't require a permit, remember to follow local guidelines for launching and launching your kayak from appropriate access points.
