STANFORD WHITE
(November 9, 1853 – June 25, 1906)

Stanford White was an American architect and partner in the architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White, the frontrunner among Beaux-Arts firms. He designed a long series of houses for the rich and the very rich, and various public, institutional, and religious buildings. His design principles embodied the "American Renaissance".

His fluent draftsmanship was highly convincing to clients who might not get much visceral understanding from a floor plan, and he caught the mood of the era. A few Long Island houses from Southampton to Montauk Point designed by White have survived. The Village Latch Inn has proudly maintained on its property the century old Terry Cottage.

“A Unique Hamptons Experience”

My wife and I just spent a needed and beautiful romantic weekend at the Village Latch Inn, and we have nothing but praise for the accommodations, service, personnel, and location.

The Village Latch is in about as perfect a location as I could imagine. Two blocks from one of THE most exclusive streets on the entire east coast – Jobs Lane (really!), and about a 1 mile walk/bike ride down a beautiful mansion lined, tree canopied road to the #1 rated beach in the entire country!

Somewhere I read a review complaining about the room rates … Hello! … This is the hottest, most prime piece of summer real estate there is! ... I thought the rates were very reasonable and fair – especially considering the location. If I wanted something cheap, I could’ve joined Snooki and co. at the Jersey shore! That’s not why people go to the Hamptons, and exclusivity is not cheap - ever!

During our stay the grounds were immaculate, the staff courteous, and the coffee and breakfast service was outstanding (unfortunately, we missed the complimentary evening wine service). The room was clean, and the queen bed was quite comfortable. But what sets The Village Latch apart from all of the other “real” Inns and B&B’s are the artistic touches that the proprietors, Marta and Martin White, have incorporated into the Inn. I enjoyed strolling down the hallways as much as I did strolling through the town. The Inn actually enhanced the whole Hamptons scene. I can’t say that I have EVER said as much for any other place I have stayed.

It is such a wonderful feeling to be part of an experience where the wealthy and famous rub elbows and shoulders among some of the artistic and literate elite. To stroll back to the Inn, and awake the next morning in what easily could be a room where “The Great Gatsby” could’ve been written – complete with overhead fan and antique phone – then stepping out into the antique and art filled hallways, gathering a cup of coffee from the kitchen, and enjoying it in the garden sun on a chaise lounge by the fountain.

Life is beautiful here. One of the few true places that actually ‘transports’ you as you relax into the surrounding.

It does seem that ‘Tr1p 4dvisor’ likes to keep negative reviews for a very long time though – over 7 years for this property at least! Though I cannot even imagine how or why people would give any credibility to such archaic rants, when I don’t even need to keep income tax records for the IRS that long!

To be fair to all those reading this review, I would like to offer the following:

If you are a full time business traveler, and have become accustomed to the familiar washable mass produced wallpaper, Asian import thin lacquered fiberboard furniture, ‘Cosby sweater’ rayon duvet covers, and the Xbox game systems available in every room at the large conglomerate hotel chains, then you probably would enjoy The Olive Garden, and Red Lobster too… but you will HATE the village latch! Not for you!!! … Check for a holiday Inn in the Jones beach area of Long Island. You will be happier there.

If you were lucky enough to grow up in a large turn of the (prior) century home, or had relatives or friends who did, and with whom you spent some time … and if you are like me, and appreciate things like antique solid wood plank floors, transoms over the doorways, real brick fireplaces, and real porcelain sinks and tubs, than you will LOVE the Village Latch Inn. It will make you feel like you are home again – with the exception that’ home’ is now full of art and opulence amidst the artists and sculptors, poets and playrights, and the wealthy elite that flock to Southampton in the summer.

This is not new construction – it is historic. The rooms are smaller than modern “mega-suite” construction on reclaimed swampland, and are not “hermetically sealed”. What makes the rooms special is their personality, feeling, and a sense of artistic Americana and early Hamptons history.

Highly recommended for anyone wanting a uniquely Hamptons experience.

Main building was beautiful, that is where we stayed.
