LaPolena Bed & Breakfast

LaPolena Bed & Breakfast Southport's grand Bed & Breakfast for those who demand simple elegance I had planned to move to NC once my children were out of school.

Being on opposite coasts from my childhood friend for 35 years was long enough. While visiting that friend, I decided to look at properties. LaPolena was the first property viewed and knew it was the right fit. The town is small, quaint and full of charm. Something out of the pages of days long ago. I couldn't resist and bought this lovely home. Each room taking into consideration the rich history

of North Carolina; Shells, Aviation, Anchors & The Figurehead. We truly hope you will enjoy LaPolena; A contemporary Inn.

A little over eight years ago LaPolena opened its doors to offer a unique alternative to travelers and locals alike. We have since welcomed over three thousand guests from 40 states and 21 countries, many of whom shared their stories in our guest books. I have read each and every entry and you have become a part of the LaPolena family.

As many of you know, the original plan was to operate the B&B for ten years, but God always laughs at me when I tell Him my plan and as Miss Kathy said at my celebration last week, "LaPolena, has seen so many big life events!" You too have shared your biggest life memories with me, and I thank you all for that opportunity.

Earlier in May we hosted our last guests. Cynthia and David Bowler were regulars at LaPolena, so I found it most fitting to close the doors as we exchanged the words, "Safe travels, see you next time!" I couldn't bear to tell them they were my last guests.

Thank you for allowing LaPolena to be a part of your anniversary, birthday, holiday getaway, wedding, babymoon, holiday celebrations, girls weekends, reunions, employment search, home search, family ring ceremonies and memorials over the past eight years. I especially thank all the women who came out on Wednesday nights for wine! I am filled with gratitude.

As I write, the new owners are getting settled in and will make the home their private residence. Please welcome them just as you did when I came to call Southport my home.

LaPolena may be closing, but "Miss Suzy" will continue to serve. Once settled into my new location, I plan be an interim innkeeper allowing owners/operators to take a break, just as Miss Kathy did for me. So, this is not a goodbye, but perhaps one day when you check into another bed and breakfast, I will once again greet you and our families reunite.

With gratitude,
Suzy

Our friend Susan Bladholm stayed with us back in 2021 during the early stages of this project. She came to Southport to meet with Chad Paul of Bald Head Island Ltd to learn about our ferry system. We are excited to see how far this project has come. Congratulations to Susan. 👏🏻

The effort to get a ferry between Portland and Vancouver is in a critical year.

Our Story

We had planned to move to NC once our children were out of school. Being on opposite coasts from my childhood friend for 35 years was long enough. While visiting that friend, we decided to look at properties. LaPolena was the first property we saw, and fell in love. The town is small, quaint and full of charm. Something out of the pages of days long ago. We couldn't resist and bought this lovely home. We first prepared it as a vacation rental; now it is a Bed and Breakfast. We have prepared each room taking into consideration the rich history of North Carolina; Shells, Aviation, Anchors & The Figurehead. We truly hope you will come and enjoy LaPolena.
