On August 1, 1941, the Tinton Pine Extension Club held their monthly meeting at Iron Creek Lake, four years to the day of the lake's official opening. The Club existed as an auxiallary society for the town's women, doing such good works as organizing dances, putting on theatrical productions as well as sharing knowledge of the domestic variety; needle point, canning, cooking, sewing and so forth. Formed in 1927, the TPEC started a fund drive for the construction of Tinton's Community Building. When it became apparent it did not have enough money to complete the project they convinced every Black Hills Tin Company employee (read: men) to donate a day's wage. This generousity covered the bills the rest of the way through. Ultimately covered with stucco, the Community Building hosted town meetings, plays, dances, movie nights, even grade school basketball games against other small towns. The once maginificent structure was torn down in the 1970s, but the Club continued on until 1983, or twenty-four years after Tinton was abandoned. Its last functions were visits to former residents, now shut-ins, at Spearfish's Dorsett Home for the elderly. Next weekend, on August 29, Iron Creek Lake will be celebrating the 90th anniversary of the dam's completion. Please consider joining the fun. The lake is a Lawrence County treasure.
