The railroads built Spokane. And Spokane built downtown. 🚂

In 1882, the Northern Pacific Railway cut through our city. By 1915, three major railroads converged here, creating the thriving hub that became downtown Spokane.

That elevated viaduct? A massive engineering feat that reshaped the city's landscape. Warehouses and commercial buildings sprang up around the tracks, fueling Spokane's boom years.

Steam Plant Hotel sits steps from those same tracks—a living piece of that railroad legacy. Our 1916 Steam Plant building once powered downtown. Today, it's where history and hospitality meet.

Stay with us and feel the pulse of Spokane's greatest era.

The Viaduct That Changed Everything. 🚂

It's 1912. Trains at grade level. Automobiles dodging them. Collisions constant. The city gives the railroads an ultimatum: separate the tracks or we shut you down.

The Northern Pacific's answer? One of the most ambitious engineering projects the region had ever seen. They raised the tracks on an earthen and concrete embankment, lowered the streets below, and created the elevated viaduct that still runs through downtown today.

By 1915, Spokane's downtown was transformed. Commerce flourished. The warehouses and commercial buildings that lined the tracks became the backbone of Spokane's economy.

Steam Plant Hotel was built in 1916, just as the viaduct was being completed. We stand at the heart of this legacy—where engineering meets history.

The story didn't end in 1974. It's still being written every single day.

Today, BNSF Railway operates roughly 500 employees on the Spokane Subdivision. Timber products, mining ore, grain, agricultural commodities—the same goods that built this city 150 years ago are still flowing through Spokane's rails.

But now they're joined by petroleum products, manufactured goods, fertilizers, and food heading to ports on both coasts. Spokane remains the gateway to the West Coast, a vital link in the supply chain that connects the entire nation.

When you stay at Steam Plant Hotel, you're staying in a city that still matters. A place where commerce, culture, and community intersect. Where the past isn't just remembered—it's actively shaping the future.

We're steps from the glow of the historic Steam Plant, two blocks from the Bing Crosby Theater, and five minutes from downtown's best venues. But more than that, you're in the heart of Spokane's living, breathing industrial heritage.

This is Spokane. This is where it all connects. This is where you belong.
