Ever wonder where “Jack Pine Savage Days” got its name?

The Jack Pine is a Northwoods original — hardy, a little wild, and able to thrive where others can’t.

Just like life up here.

A Jack Pine (Pinus banksiana) is a rugged, native pine tree that thrives in sandy soil and cold northern climates — especially across Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Canada.

It’s known for its toughness — growing in places where most trees can’t. The trunk often twists and leans, giving it that scrappy “Northwoods” character.

Jack Pines are also famous for their serotinous cones, which only open to release seeds when exposed to heat — usually from a forest fire or intense sun. That resilience is part of what makes them such a Northwoods symbol: strong, persistent, and deeply rooted.

Fun fact: The endangered Kirtland’s warbler nests almost exclusively in young Jack Pine forests, making these trees crucial for wildlife too.

Little things that make lake life a little easier 💧

This season we added a new dishwasher and microwave — because even on vacation, the goal is less cleanup and more time outside.

Whether it’s a big breakfast before hitting the water or easy dinners after sunset, the kitchen’s ready for whatever your stay brings.

Just a few minutes from the cabin, Spooner comes alive every August for Jack Pine Savage Days — a weekend packed with small-town charm, live music, and that classic Northwoods energy.

☀️ Morning: Start the day with the Fireman’s Pancake Breakfast or join the PowerPlay 5K through town. If you’re not an early riser, wander over to the Farmer’s Market or stop by the Crazy Days Art + Craft Fair on Walnut Street.

🎨 Midday: The kids will love the Inflatable Fun Zone and Bookmobile crafts on Front Street, while you browse local vendors and grab a bite from Vera’s Snack Shack or the Boy Scouts’ food booth.

🚗 Afternoon: Catch the Car, Truck & Bike Show at Railroad Park, or sign up for a little friendly competition in the Bean Bag Tournament or Sand Volleyball Tourney.

🎶 Evening: As the sun sets, the music starts — live bands take the stage at the Lodge Hotel tent, with Blake Johnson and Th3rd L3vel headlining this year. Stay late for good tunes, cold drinks, and that laid-back Spooner vibe.

It’s one of those weekends that remind you why we love it up here — simple fun, friendly faces, and memories that stick around long after the summer ends.

Every July, Hayward celebrates its timber roots with the Lumberjack World Championships — three days of sawing, chopping, log rolling, and pole climbing that showcase the skill, strength, and fun of the Northwoods way of life.

Held at the historic Lumberjack Bowl, the event draws competitors and fans from all over the world. You’ll hear chainsaws, see sawdust fly, and probably leave craving pancakes and plaid.
