🌀 BIG OAKS HURRICANE & TROPICAL STORM SEASON REMINDER 🌀
We are definitely in Hurricane and Tropical Storm Season, and everyone at Big Oaks needs to take a few minutes NOW to make sure they are prepared.
Hopefully we will never need to put these plans into action — but once a storm is approaching, it can be too late to begin figuring out what to do.
⚠️ IMPORTANT FOR ALL BIG OAKS RESIDENTS & GUESTS
Big Oaks RV Resort is located in Pasco County, and there are NO designated hurricane or tropical-storm “secure shelters” anywhere within the resort.
RVs, park models, mobile/manufactured homes, sheds, recreational buildings and other resort structures should NOT be considered hurricane shelters.
EVERY RESIDENT AND GUEST MUST HAVE THEIR OWN EVACUATION PLAN.
Pasco County residents must follow Pasco County evacuation orders. Pasco County guidance also states that residents of mobile/manufactured homes and RVs must evacuate when mandatory evacuation orders are issued.
Because Big Oaks is located in the far northern portion of Pasco County, some Hernando County shelters may actually be closer than Pasco shelters.
If you plan to use a Hernando County shelter, DO NOT simply drive to a shelter because it appears on a list. Shelter locations are opened according to the particular storm. Call Hernando County Emergency Management first to confirm that the shelter is OPEN and able to accept you.

🐶🐱 IF YOU HAVE PETS
Make your pet evacuation plan NOW.
Hernando County's designated pet-friendly evacuation shelter is generally:
D.S. Parrott Middle School

Brooksville, FL 34601
However, DO NOT assume it will be open for every storm. Confirm with Hernando County Emergency Management before leaving.
Have ready for each pet:
• Carrier or crate
• Collar and identification
• Leash or harness
• Current vaccination records
• Several days of food and water
• Medications
• Food and water bowls
• Bedding or comfort items
• Cleanup supplies
• Recent photograph of you with your pet
♿ SPECIAL NEEDS / MEDICAL ASSISTANCE
Anyone who may require a Special Needs Shelter should make arrangements BEFORE a storm is approaching.
Because Big Oaks is located in Pasco County, residents needing Special Needs assistance should register with Pasco County Emergency Management at 727-847-8137.
Do not wait until an evacuation order has been issued to begin this process.
🏠 KNOW WHERE YOU WILL GO
Every household should have a Plan A and preferably a Plan B.
Your plan might include:
• Staying with family or friends in a safe structure outside the evacuation area
• A hotel or motel away from the threatened area
• An activated Pasco County public shelter
• An activated Hernando County shelter after confirming availability
• A Special Needs Shelter if you qualify and have made arrangements
Know how you are getting there, what route you will take and what you will bring.
🚗 Keep your vehicle fueled. Do not wait until evacuation traffic begins and gas stations become crowded or run out of fuel.
🏕️ SECURE YOUR SITE BEFORE THE WEATHER ARRIVES
Please don't wait until winds are already increasing.
Residents should:
• Retract and secure ALL RV awnings
• Take down or firmly secure canopies and shade structures
• Bring in patio furniture
• Secure grills
• Bring in umbrellas
• Secure bicycles
• Bring in or secure plants and flowerpots
• Remove flags, signs and outdoor decorations
• Secure trash cans and loose containers
• Remove anything that could become airborne
• Secure sheds and exterior storage areas
• Check windows and doors
• Protect important outdoor equipment
Something that seems harmless sitting on your patio can become a dangerous projectile in high winds.
🎒 PREPARE YOUR EMERGENCY SUPPLIES NOW
Have enough supplies for at least several days, preferably longer:

✅ Prescription medications
✅ First-aid supplies
✅ Flashlights
✅ Extra batteries
✅ Battery-powered or NOAA weather radio
✅ Cell-phone chargers
✅ Portable power banks

✅ Toilet paper and paper towels
✅ Garbage bags
✅ Cash in small bills
✅ Identification
✅ Insurance information
✅ Emergency contact information
✅ Medical information
✅ Important documents in a waterproof container
✅ Extra clothing
✅ Sturdy shoes
✅ Blankets and pillows
✅ Eyeglasses
✅ Hearing-aid batteries
✅ Mobility equipment
✅ Cane, walker or wheelchair if needed
✅ CPAP or other necessary medical equipment
✅ A plan for powering necessary medical equipment during an outage
✅ Pet supplies
✅ Full tank of fuel
📱 STAY INFORMED
Keep your cell phone charged and pay attention to official information from:
• Pasco County Emergency Management
• Hernando County Emergency Management
• National Weather Service
• National Hurricane Center
• Local television and radio
Do not rely solely on Facebook posts, rumors or what someone heard from somebody else.
⚠️ PLEASE DO NOT WAIT FOR A HURRICANE WARNING TO BEGIN PREPARING.
By that point:
• Gas stations may have long lines
• Stores may be running out of supplies
• Hotels may be full
• Roads may become congested
• Shelters may be filling
• Winds and heavy rain may already be approaching
And most importantly:
BIG OAKS DOES NOT HAVE A HURRICANE SHELTER.
Every resident and guest is responsible for knowing where they will go, how they will get there, and what they will take with them if evacuation becomes necessary.
Please prepare now, check on your neighbors, especially those who may need a little extra assistance, and make sure your family and friends know your evacuation plans.
We hope we never need them — but a plan made on a beautiful sunny Florida day is much better than trying to make one while a hurricane is coming.
