Fall may officially be but just a few days away, but it's still going to be a few more weeks before we see very noticeable changes around the state.

Seemingly this year, we've had more rain in many parts of the state than in recent years, so we're hopeful of capturing vibrant colors as we explore the Ozarks and the Ouachitas again this fall.

Follow along over the coming weeks as we track fall's progress in AR and find a pretty cool interactive fall foliage map supplied by Explore Fall in the comments below!

🍂 Fall Observing Tips
As the air cools and nights grow longer, fall becomes one of the most rewarding times to explore the night sky. Here are a few detailed tips to elevate your autumn astronomy sessions:

🔭 Track the Andromeda Galaxy (M31)
Fall offers some of the best visibility of Andromeda—our nearest major galactic neighbor, about 2.5 million light-years away. Under dark skies, it appears as a faint, elongated smudge to the naked eye. A mid-size telescope will reveal its bright core and surrounding halo—perfect targets for wide-field astrophotography.

🌌 Use the Great Square of Pegasus as a Celestial Compass
This prominent asterism rises in the east and forms a seasonal anchor for autumn constellations, such as Andromeda, Pisces and Aquarius. Using asterisms is crucial for learning to navigate without apps or GoTo mounts.

♈ Track the Zodiac Shift
Fall signals the celestial handoff from summer to winter skies.

In early fall, catch Sagittarius and the galactic center of the Milky Way sinking in the west. As the season progresses, look eastward for Aquarius, Aries and Pisces. This seasonal zodiac shift offers a natural rhythm to plan your observing targets.

☄️ Bonus: Meteor Showers to Watch

Orionids (peak ~Oct 21): Fast, bright meteors originating from Halley’s Comet—best before dawn.
Leonids (peak ~Nov 17): Known for occasional storms, with trails that can linger in the sky.

Get ready for one of the summer’s most dazzling sky shows: the Perseids meteor shower will reach its peak on the night of August 12–13, 2025.

Though the Perseids technically start in late July and continue through August 24, this two-night window promises the highest meteor activity, with up to 150 meteors an hour blazing through Earth’s atmosphere at the peak.

Each flash is a tiny piece of debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle burning up in our sky a cosmic fireworks display that has wowed skywatchers for generations.

However, this year comes with a small catch: the Perseid peak will fall close to the full moon, meaning the bright lunar glow may wash out some of the fainter shooting stars. Don’t let that stop you! Experts like those at the Farmer’s Almanac assure that you can still catch plenty of meteors if you simply get away from city lights and let your eyes adjust to the dark.

The best advice? Head to a rural spot, gaze at the darkest part of the sky, be patient, and let the universe put on its show. Some recommend waiting until later in August for better moon conditions, but the Perseids are at their most spectacular right around mid-month.

No matter how many you spot, the Perseids remain one of the year’s can’t-miss celestial events a chance to connect with the cosmos and witness a natural light show that never fails to inspire awe.
