Darkhorse Lodge We are raising the funds necessary to operate our combat veterans retreat in west Tennessee.

Once completed, there will be 5 guest cabins with 5 rooms per cabin, each room named for one of the 25 men lost from the Marine Corps 3/5, Darkhorse unit. When our 19 year old son, LCpl Alec E Catherwood, was killed in action on October 14, 2010, it felt as if the world had ended for us. After realizing that we had no choice but to go on, I stayed up nights, wondering what I could do for those who did come home. Once I had the basics down, my very smart husband added some much needed improvements to the plan. Finding my new purpose in life has given me a reason to get up each morning and face the challenges ahead. We will need ALOT of money to get this built. 5 guest cabins, a staff cabin, a shower house and a dining facility (named for US Army National Guard, Specialist Tim Bowman, who committed su***de on Thanksgiving Day, 2005 after returning home from Iraq). Our employees will be combat veterans as well, including men who will take the participants fishing at one of the most beautiful spots in the south (oh yeah, we'll need boats and gear donated as well). Our cabins will be handicapped accessible to accommodate as many of these heroes as possible.

Dang! Talk about a great week with some great guys! We are so lucky to have such fantastic guests here at DHL.
I will say, however, choosing pictures for this post was SO hard to do. I took some, Charlie and Joe took some and our guests contributed also, and Facebook only allowed 80.
These are 3/5 Darkhorse Marines, most having not seen each other for 15 or 16 years.
Every night thwy had a bonfire, they played horse shoes and corn hole repeatedly, did some axe throwing and used the workout pavilion every single day!
And that's just off the water. At the lake, they fished, they swam and some slept. I love to see the relaxation and fun.
My heart is full! ❤️
See ya next year, guys!

Thank you, Navy. Happy birthday! 🎂

We said goodbye to our 3/5 friends (pictures of the group to follow soon) this morning while it was still dark out, washed linens, started the bed making, then drove 7 hours to Missouri.
I got to speak, albeit a bit ramble-y, to a ton of people at the Fishing For Freedom 2026 tournament dinner. Some of these wonderful men are previous lodge guests and we cannot wait to welcome them and their friends back to the lodge next year. Thanks for having me, guys. What a fantastic event you host each year! ❤️

16 years ago today, we lost the first of what would be 25 Marines from the 3rd battalion, 5th Marines, Darkhorse unit in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. LCpl John Sparks was KIA on October 8th, 2010.
Today, we got to honor and remember John with some of 3/5's own here at Darkhorse Lodge.
When we began this journey, little did we know how deeply meaningful the ride would be. What a gift to experience the men and women we get to meet here. ❤️

This group was a blast! I honestly don't know that I have heard as much laughter as I did from these guys! They fished, it was cool enough to have fires, they shot darts (we found out the last morning that Jeff is a professional dart player!), they threw axes, they cold plunged and they went out to Ft. Donelson.
We are thrilled to have Charlie's cousin, Joe join us as our second boat captain for the last few groups of the season. What a wonderful addition to the DHL family. I'd also like to thank Franco for coming down from Chicago to help me in the kitchen. Crazy how much difference another set of hands makes!
Tuesday another group arrives and the weather looks like it will cooperate again. ❤️

Thanks to all who contributed photos!

Thank you, Robert. ❤️

Not only do we have windows, but we now have doors! We have doors and the beginning of the deck structure. Posts are going in to support a beautiful deck that will connect to the long deck that runs the length of the cabins. It's looking insanely good!
