Just a mile and a half off the Blue Ridge Parkway, Springmaid Mountain is the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Open year-round, all cabins include satellite television, cooking utensils, kitchen appliances, microwave, coffee pot, towels and bed linens.

Of all the places Anne Springs Close loved, her son Ell says Springmaid Mountain was the place she would choose when she wanted to get away.

She spent summers here during horse camp. She rode horses, hiked the trails and escaped to her cabin on the hill. Her love for the property ultimately shaped what Springmaid would become and the way it is still cared for today.

More than 40 years later, much of what Anne loved about this place is still here: the woods, the trails, the horses, the river and the opportunity to simply get outside.

As Ell put it, if people who come here today feel even a little of what his mother felt for this property, that’s a tribute to her.

And perhaps that’s one of the best ways to carry a legacy forward.

Maybe the itinerary is the problem.

We’re so used to planning a trip around what we’re going to do next. Where are we eating? What are we seeing? What time do we need to leave? What can we fit in before dinner?

And then there are places where sitting beside the river for an hour feels like a perfectly good use of the afternoon.

No reservations. No schedule. No need to be anywhere else.

Maybe getting away doesn’t always need an itinerary.

Ask four people what makes Springmaid Mountain special, and you’ll hear different versions of the same answer.

It’s the slower pace. The quiet. The freedom to wander. The chance to put down your phone, get outside and reconnect with the people around you.

For more than 40 years, families have come here to ride horses, hike trails, fish, play in the river or simply spend a few days with nowhere else they need to be. A lot has changed over those four decades. But maybe what makes Springmaid special is what hasn’t.

The mountain still has a way of making you slow down.
