Clang, clang, clang goes the trolley… right into Lafayette Square! 🚋✨

Did you catch Meet Me in St. Louis at The Muny? If those stunning digital backgrounds and historic Victorian mansions looked familiar, your eyes weren’t deceiving you! 🗝️📱

To set the stage for the iconic 1904 World’s Fair (celebrating the centennial of the Louisiana Purchase), The Muny’s creative team used digital projections featuring the unmistakable, grand architecture of Lafayette Square—including the gorgeous French Second Empire homes that define our neighborhood.

There’s something truly magical about watching St. Louis history brought to life under the stars in Forest Park, and then coming home to live in it! 🌟

When you stay with us at Lafayette Square Inn, you aren’t just looking at a digital backdrop—you’re stepping straight onto the set. From our historic French Second Empire architecture and classic mansard roof to our quiet, leafy streets, you get to experience turn-of-the-century St. Louis charm in real life (with all the modern comforts, of course 😉).

Plus, you can explore history up close in our very own mini-museum! We feature artifacts celebrating the 1904 World’s Fair and the Louisiana Purchase Exposition—the central heart and soul of the story, music, and movie itself. 🎟️📜

Planning your next St. Louis getaway or theatre night out? Come find your cozy corner in the heart of history! 🌿🕯️

Tucked behind the main house of our 1876 historic inn, history remains stubbornly preserved in the original carriage house. Carved into its wooden crossbeams are the numbers 1883 (the year the carriage house was built) and 1815 (our address), preserving the authentic 19th-century penmanship that captures the thick, fluid line weight of period fountain-pen script.

Every inch of this property tells a story of survival, resilience, and revival. We are proud to write the next chapter and bring this piece of neighborhood history back to life. Your step back through time awaits you at the Lafayette Square Inn. Book direct with the link in our bio.

✨ Summertime refresh at the Lafayette Square Inn! ✨

There’s something so special about watching our front garden planter transform with every new season. We love greeting our guests with a fresh look all year round, but this particular arrangement holds a special place in our hearts.

For last season's display, we brought together a vibrant mix of trailing English ivy spilling softly over the edges, brilliant purple petunias adding a pop of rich color, and a dramatic centerpiece of white osteospermum (African daisies) that catch the morning sun just right.

Stop by and take a look next time you're in the neighborhood—each season offers a new bloom! 🌿🌸🏡

With the peacful sound of flowing water and the warm sun overhead, it feels like summer all year long. ✌️💦😎

Crafting a custom piece that bridges vintage romance and modern design comes down to the details. This dresser mirrors the palette of the Josephine Suite by echoing both the warm yellow backdrop and soft sage accent walls. The rich dark frame anchors the room's lighter tones, while the brass hardware and washed finish reflect the suite’s historic charm.

To achieve this look, a textured pattern mat was applied across the drawer fronts, sealed with a dark base, and finished with a layered color wash in muted sage and warm gold tones. The wash settles directly into the embossed pattern, catching the light and creating an authentic aged patina. By pairing raised relief with a weathered glaze, the chest strikes the exact balance between old-world character and polished modern design.

We’d like to think we would have made Empress Marie-Josèphe-Rose Tascher de La Pagerie—better known as Empress Joséphine—proud. Renowned as an iconic tastemaker, avid art collector, and pioneer of the French Empire style at Château de Malmaison, her eye for blending classical antiquity with bold design defined an era. This piece carries on that legacy, built to feel right at home in the suite that bears her name.

What’s your favorite detail: the warm top tone or the textured relief drawers? Let us know below! 👇

A serendipitous discovery at Art in the Park in St. Louis Hills' Francis Park Art In The Park - Francis Park, St. Louis ✨ We were browsing when we came across this beautiful colored hand drawing of our beloved Inn. The artist shared that he was inspired to capture our building specifically because of the elegant fleur-de-lis scrollwork above the door and windows—a detail unique among the buildings in the square.

It was a joy to find someone else who appreciated this special feature, especially knowing its rich history. The fleur-de-lis, the official symbol of St. Louis, represents everything from royalty and divine right to purity, faith, wisdom, and chivalry. We're so proud that our Inn displays this powerful symbol, and so grateful that the home we love could serve as the creative inspiration for this artist.

Finding the perfect details to complement a French Second Empire mansion built in 1876 takes time, patience, and a lot of searching, but every once in a while, everything aligns.

We finally found an authentic, turn-of-the-century set of fine antique Limoges china by Theodore Haviland. Theodore Haviland (1842–1929) was a pivotal figure in French Limoges porcelain, known for transforming a high-end European luxury product into an accessible worldwide brand.

This set of porcelain "dinner service" carries double validation: an incised "TH" mark stamped directly into the raw white-ware clay before firing, paired with their signature red script mark on the underside dating its decoration to between 1903 and 1925. Complete with delicate floral garlands, rich blue detailing, and gold gilding, it brings true French craftsmanship right to our dining room.

To host it, we paired it with a late Victorian walnut china cabinet dating to the 1880s–1890s. With its Renaissance Revival carved crest and rich burled grain, the piece fits the exact era and spirit of our 1876 home.

When honoring historical architecture, every detail matters—right down to the plates on the dining table and the woodwork that holds them. We can’t wait to set the table with these for our guests!
