Cty K (Rustic Rd 60) in all its peak Fall glory. Oct 6, 2026. It's hard to capture the vibrant yellow, but trust me, it's a dreamy drive at Fall peak. Rustic roads are so worth preserving.

Trails! Hiking! Fall! This one is a little farther from us (30min), but a pleasant picturesque loop drive to Presque Isle that includes M, B & W.
DETAILS & LENGTH: 2 loops, 3 mi ea. Easy. Few hills. Watch for tree roots. No bthrm, bikes.

OPTIONS: Bring your MTN bikes and do Winman Trails too. Or bring any bikes and catch the Heart of Vilas on W just west of Winman or at Gooches.
OR for more hiking, catch the Lumberjack Trail on K.
EAT: PIPub, Outpost in Presque Isle, or Gooches in Boulder Junction.

And so begins our series on Trails & Routes! Some beyond the Heart of Vilas, as is this one. Old White Birch Rd is one you can bike, walk or drive. It's divine in the Fall and wonderfully shaded & cool on a hot day all the way to the Corner Store where you can get ice cream (5mi).

1 mile east from Lands End on lovely Cty K (Rustic Rd #60) you'll see Old White Birch Rd. K obviously paved. Old White Birch hard packed dirt, some gravel, sand. Little traveled.Turns into pavement for the last mile to the Corner Store.

These pics from today, 09/29/26. Stay tuned, for when in a few weeks after the leaves have mostly fallen, you'll see the lovely golden tamaracks late Oct/early Nov on this same route. 10mi round trip from Lands End.

OPTIONS: If you're biking, and if you get to the Corner Store, jump on the Heart of Vilas Trail across the road and bike a few more miles to Sayner, There, stop at Northern Highland Coffee Company for a fruity smoothie! Continue on another approx 4mi to St Germain. OR from Old White Birch, try MTN biking on the snowmobile trails. The first on the right takes you to Stillwaters.

NOTE: There are 2 big hills to go up on K. If biking or walking, wear bright colors, orange or flashing reflectors.

The beauty of Fall is upon us. It also involves us being able to access trails that are inaccessible during summer. Rediscovering what will once again become the snowshoe trail... Happy Fall!

When completed, the 10-mile River Trail would connect the end of the Heart of Vilas County trail in St. Germain to the end of the Three-Eagle Trail in Eagle River along the Highway 70 corridor.

Some people attract attention. Bob attracts goats. 😄

The boys wasted no time surrounding Bob and making sure he knew he was their newest best friend. If you need help finding the goats at Lumberjack Village, don't worry... they'll find you.

We've been told that Lands End used to be a popular bear hunting area. So we figured we needed somewhat of a suitable mascot! We will be bringing him home soon from Lumberjack Village. Hmm, I guess he'll need a name... Any ideas?
