Fjeldheim isn't really "destination vacation lodging", though it can serve that role (contact us at least a month ahead of time to arrange things like catered meals for your group, and to arrange appropriate local activities and outings: Josh knows everyone and can get you good deals (and steer you away from disappointment)).

Fjeldheim, for the majority of our guests, isn't a "guest house." It's a home away from home.

Weddings, anniversaries, annual family reunions. Corporate, academic, and first-responder retreats— not one-offs, but repeats. People come back, over and over, usually with extended family, because Fjeldheim feels like an extended home.

IYKYK... and if so, Josh & I love this role in your lives. It is an honor.

If you're new to Fjeldheim, or just checking us out to see what we're like, welcome! We look forward to getting to know you too, and making your stay with us as comfortable and memorable as possible.

And if you're coming up next week for the first-ever Fjeldheim Writers Retreat, we are thrilled! We have never done a Fjeldheim-branded event at the Tahoe Mountain Home before. If it goes well, we'll make it an annual thing, right around this time of year (eating into Josh's "empty house time" but he says he doesn't mind). ;-)

Keep an eye on this weekend’s forecast 👀 we are supposed to receive fresh snow on Friday and Saturday. It is especially important to arrive early on weekend powder days. And (we can not stress this enough) turn SLOWLY into the valley when the road is snowy!

Well, that was an ...eventful... summer and fall season! Fjeldheim survived another fire season and the first big snowstorm has already graced the upper slopes of the Sierra Nevadas with a good beginning to our snowpack. Thanksgiving and Christmas are already booked (they fill early, actually) and the winter calendar is filling fast. If you're thinking of a group trip to Tahoe this winter, go to our official site and call or email us today!

Fjeldheim: The Extended-Family “Quarantine Pod” at Lake Tahoe!
Yes, there’s a global pandemic going on. That puts the brakes on vacation plans to faraway fantasy destinations like Lake Tahoe. We get it—and we want to give you the confidence to release those brakes.

We are putting the final touches on an official contagion-prevention protocol for Fjeldheim, with two goals:
1. to minimize the viral load you might pick up when you’re out and about, and
2. to ensure that there will be zero viral transmission between guest groups.

While your group is all together at Fjeldheim, you’ll be your own temporary household, setting your own boundaries at your own discretion, of course.

And the boundary between your big group and the rest of the world will be as reliable as wise precautions can make it. Which, according to this New York Times article, is surprisingly reliable!

If you’re coming up to enjoy the mountains, the forests, the lakeshore, and water activities (from fishing to waterskiing and everything in between), Fjeldheim is simply the safest place to stay in Tahoe, for any big group of people.

It might be awkward, difficult and even risky. But joining a social bubble might just save your sanity.

Every time a happy couple checks out Fjeldheim as a possible wedding venue, we warn them that the Tahoe Basin weather is beautiful but also unpredictable. Snow can fall on any day of the year. Really!

Usually, they nod and smile, obviously thinking “yeah, yeah, a freak snowstorm on our outdoor wedding ceremony in July, the standard disclaimer about stuff that’s out of their control.”

But Tahoe locals will tell you—it really CAN snow in any season, at any month or day of the year. Like last weekend, for instance!
https://www.reddit.com/r/tahoe/comments/gys7u3/unexpected_snow_today_near_marlette_lake/

We take it in stride. The weather forecast always sees it coming, and we believe them: sometimes it doesn’t snow much, or it misses us and snows somewhere else in Tahoe. And it’s fun to see the delight on the faces of children visiting us when they get an unexpected snow day in June (or July or August or September).

The adults aren’t always so sanguine, though, especially when the unexpected snow ruins their plans for a perfect sunny day in the Sierras.

But one thing we ALWAYS count on in Tahoe is summer tourism. No matter what the weather is like, visitors always begin arriving for Memorial Day weekend, and they fill our summer all the way through Labor Day weekend and into September. We rely on that dependable tourism to pay our bills for the entire year.

So you can imagine how difficult it is when an unexpected string of crises meant that no one at all came to celebrate Memorial Day weekend here.

All our prior reservations for June had canceled, of course, since those decisions mostly had to be made in April or early May. Large groups aren’t agile. Big extended families need more lead time if plans will change.

But then our July reservations began to cancel.

And now our August reservations are beginning to cancel too.

Like a blanket of snow on the first tee at tee time, but magnified a summer-fold, this has been a bit demoralizing for us at Fjeldheim. Especially because we have the house and yard looking beautiful for you—even the driveway is looking its best.

And now, it is also the best value of any lodging in Tahoe.
Josh and I have run the numbers, and if no one stays at Fjeldheim this summer, we are in big trouble. Any income is better than no income. So we are prepared to offer lodging deals at Fjeldheim that (hopefully!) will never be repeated.

Three things are conspiring to make this the best summer ever for you to visit Tahoe and stay at Fjeldheim:

1. We suddenly have more availability than we have ever had, on this date. Normally, by now, if you call us to book a summer visit, we’ll say “for next summer, huh? Good for you, booking early…” because by the end of April, our summer calendar is packed solid. But if you call now, you’ll have your pick of dates.

2. We suddenly are more motivated than ever to bargain with you. We can’t mention our suggested prices publicly in print, but if you call Josh with the dates you want to come, we will work something out to make it affordable for you. Very affordable.

3. Tahoe is open and ready for business! Folks up here take Covid-19 very seriously, so every business has put protective measures in place for you—and every business is open and wants your business. From restaurants and spas to wilderness adventures, this is the summer to come if you want to avoid crowds and find deals you may never see again.

(And if it just happens to snow a little while you’re up here, don’t worry, it will melt away by the afternoon!)

We hope to see you and your family and friends here soon!

Sincerely,

—Nic Nelson and Josh Lufkin

It has been a long TEN WEEKS of quarantine restrictions, lockdown, shutdown, whatever you call it where you are now. But please know that, even though Tahoe is NOT open right now for Memorial Day weekend, it will open soon. And when it opens, it will open wisely.

Yes, there will be contagion-prevention measures in place.
No, they will not spoil your fun!Restaurants and hospitality (read: hotels, and Fjeldheim!) will re-open mid-June, and by July 1st we expect Tahoe’s “mid-pandemic New Normal” will be well established.

If you are already booked to stay at Fjeldheim in July, be encouraged! We keep the house meticulously disinfected for you, and keeping your big group together under one roof, without any hotel staff and maid service, is definitely a “best practice” until a vaccine is approved or the pandemic fully runs its course.

Fjeldheim is the safest place to stay in Tahoe.

And, may we say with pardonable pride, it has the most beautiful views in Tahoe too...

With Memorial Day around the corner and temperatures this weekend expected to be in the 70s with clear blue skies, Tahoe officials are bracing for a wave of visitors
