We took a short trip to Mount St Helens. There is an overlook less than an hour from the campground, and is a beautiful drive all on its own. We continued on into the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, slightly over 1.5 hours from Timberlake. Again, the rest of the drive is beautiful, and the Larhar Viewpoint gives a close-up view of the south (non-crater) side of the mountain. This drive also takes you to Ape Cave in the park, the longest continuous lava tube in the continental US (saving that adventure for our next trip, as you have to reserve a time slot).
